If you have read my post on the crufts thread you'll see I am interested in getting into showing chi's.
Now I'm not expecting to go out and buy a champion dog or anything.
BUT I do want to show a chi in local(ish) dog shows.
I have enrolled in both show classes and puppy training classes this week with chico.
I cant show chico as he isnt kc reg, but am going along anyway for the experience and fun.
Can anyone offer any advice on what to expect, any chi clubs that are good to be a member of (I found a page for one that hadnt been updated since 2005, so either moved or is no longer)
I plan to look about now for a kc reg puppy, what should I look for in a breeder when considering a dog for showing?
Would appreciate any advice at all, it all seems so daunting at the moment
the only advise i can give you is to read up on showing and what kc standards are talk to some top breeders and find a puppy from there. I wanted to show Taz he had all that they were looking for except that as in a lot of chis his baby teeth didnt fall out (had to be pulled) so it messed up his adult teeth a bit. So i could not show him. (and i never finished filling out the papers)
you can show Chico in companion/fun shows they often have classes for toy breeds without the need for him to be KC reg to see if you like it/get some experience - these are usually advertised in the dog press and mainly held in the spring/summertime the KC website may also have some listed
as regards finding a puppy perhapes contact the breed clubs for a list of breeders? go along to some shows and talk to exhibitors some of which will also breed
I am not sure about where you are but here in the states it is good to go to some shows watch and learn while checking out the Chis you like in the ring. When you see one or two that you like then approach their handler/owner and get some info on them and find out if they have any puppies on the ground at that time or are expecting any soon. If not then maybe they can put you to finding a good reputable show breeder in your area. This is a great way to possibly finding a mentor. One thing that I always feel people need to be aware of is....there are lots of ads out there claiming to have potential show pups available. If you are truly serious in wanting to find a pup to show then you need to buy from a breeder that shows as they know what their lines produce and can help you pick a puppy. Anyone can say they have a pup that could be shown but most do not have the correct conformation to be in the ring. I would also go to a site that has the standard for chis. Here it would be the AKC standard but I am not sure about yours? Study the pictures to get a good eye for what the correct conformation is. Also as said above a good place to start looking for reputable breeder is your local breed club but please do beware of the breeders that claim to have show pups but do not show themselves.

makes sense really to go to a breeder that shows, or as you say, how do you know what your getting.
I have been told there are other toy dog owners at show class tomorrow, not sure if chi owners will be there.

am looking for a local chi club or dog club, but cant seem to find one near me.
Hi IWAC, the BCC (British Chihuahua Club) hold a lovely open show in Hertfordshire in the spring and summer, its a great show, and lots of people come to just watch and see what goes on in a show environment. Its a lot of fun, and very informal, wheras some of the champ shows etc are more formal. I think this year they are in May & August. If you would like to come along I can give you the details nearer the time, and you can bring along Chico too, not to show but to meet the other chis!
