Toby started on a leash as soon as he was fully vaccinated. Before that, I let him run around the house with his harness and leash on but didn't do formal leash training. "Heel" and teaching him to walk on a leash took about two weeks.

Definatly not too early - I started leash training Shelby when she was about 7/8 weeks old and still with her mum.. She was walking on the lead at ringcraft at 13 weeks.

Its just a case of taking it as slowly as your puppy needs and making it a completely positive experience.
