5lbs a month? Absolutely.
I'm assuming you're not
big to begin with, but many large people drop that in the first few DAYS of starting to eat right and exercise. You'd be surprised what nasty tricks your body is playing with water and such.
3,500 calories is 1 pound of body weight, so if you find your BMR, and cut out 3,500 a week off your maintenance you'll lose 1lb/week. It's science at that, when I first started dieting 2 years ago I lost 50lbs in 3 months - which is insane, I did it incorrectly (the starve and overwork method) but I kept it off. I'm about recomping my body now and doing it the right way.
