Private rescues (like the ones that use fosters) do a great thing for a lot of dogs, but for the most part I find them to be a little crazy. I even volunteered for one a lot and still help them out on occasionally, so I am not coming out of nowhere.
I personally stay away from adopting from private rescues for a few reasons-
1- as above, I work with my vet for a very minimalist vaccine schedule. Because my adult dogs are only ever vaccinated once against parvo I will never qualify with many rescues (not the case for the rescue I work with, but is the case with most others).
2- Every private rescue I have been with requires you to return the dog to them if you ever can't keep them. IF I DIE I want my dogs to be cared for by the people I have deemed appropriate in my will. I do have a will, and a plan for my dogs if I die and I would not trust some of these crazy rescue people with my pets if I die. Many people say this is impossible to enforce, but most rescues keep the dog micro chipped to them. If I die and my parents take my dogs, if one ever were lost that was from a private rescue, it would be returned to the rescue, not put where I wanted them to go.
Maybe I am a control freak, but my dogs will always come from the pound. But on a final note- private rescues save a lot of lives of dogs that would never otherwise be adopted, they do a great thing, but for the most part I think they need to look at some of their adoption practices.
