Default Employee question

My mom is pretty sure her boss is trying to get rid of her. She's been working there for 10 years and has worked 5 days a week. Recently, when she has to take my grandma to doctors appointments or has her own appointments, she asks to only work 4 days and it is granted to her. Her schedule for this coming week though is just 3 days of work. SOOO...if an Employer does not want someone working for them anymore, are they allowed to start cutting their hours and eventually fire them or keep the hours low until maybe the employee will quit??

I can tell my mom is very hurt by this; she's put with up with a lot of crap at that place.

I have a friend that owns a business and when she has an employee she wants to get rid of, she cuts her hours way back. Eventually the person quits. If you fire someone, you have to pay unemployment. If they quit, you are off the hook as a business owner.

I don't know if that's what's happening with your mom, but she should probably ask for a meeting with the manager and just get it all out and communicate her side and see what the manager says.

My husband worked at his place of employment for 10 years, he love it, never ever had bad review. He got new boss from (sorry) Hell. His boss hide notes like on dip stick of the work trucks saying call me when you get this to see if you where doing his job. He put GPS on truck if you where stopped more than 3 mins he call yelling, the stories can go on. it just got worse and worse. We knew his boss wanted my husband gone. So we packed up his desk and sure enough 3 weeks later he was fired for bad performance. the boss said clean out your desk my husband laughed said it is. lol The boss went threw 5 men after words and knew my husband did his job good and wanted him back, my husband got new better job with a nice boss like he had before. I love seeing my husband happy again, so might be sad but might be for better. It was for my husband. Oh ya more money too!!!

Maybe she's just jumping to conclusions, but honestly I'd be surprised if the intention is to get rid of her. There's another woman there who has been there for about 12-13 years, and she is not pleasant at all. Guests (it's a motel) have constantly complained about how rude she is. I remember once when I was there, a woman popped her head in to see who was working. My mom IS older than this other woman and she DOES have some health problems, but she can still manage 4-5 days of work!!

I've already contacted the health department about the motel, but they responded and said the problem wasn't "big" enough to persue. The letter did suggest I call someone about all the back pay the employees are owed. You work more than 6 hours, you deserve a break. You don't get a break? Your employer has to pay you an extra hour. My mom has never once gotten a break.

If I was her I would start looking for another job. Whether or not they are trying to get her to quit she's probably not enjoying her time there so sounds like a good time to look else where.

I say go for it!! I'm not sure of the laws in Canada but if you work more than 6 hours you always get a break actually at my job you get 30min and a 15 for 6 hours. Please pursue this she deserves so much better. -I'm a labour studies major so I can't stand when employers try to take advantage of their workers.
