You can put your own music on it, yes. It does not have a ton of space though and you can't add an SD card, just so you know. You can add an SD card with some of the other small tablet brands, so that might be something else you might want to consider. I personally don't use mine for music at all, I use my iPod for that.
As for movies, you can put movies on it or you can download them off Amazon. With Amazon they are streamable, so you need to be near WiFi to watch them if you do it that way. If you belong to Amazon Prime a lot of the movies are free. Otherwise it's about 2.00 or 3.00 for each movie, sorta like a rental. I don't really watch many movies on mine though, someone else may know more.
