Hubby loves piroshkis. I never thought about making them but perhaps I will have to one day as a surprise.
It depends on my mood basically what I put in it. Usually I just put pepperoni but sometimes (like today) I add cheese. If I am feeling very ambitious I will make pizza sauce and put some of that in it too.
I usually make them for some friends in California every year for Christmas because they had never heard of pepperoni rolls before we started talking. Through introducing them to pepperoni rolls I found out that they originated not an hour up the road from my old home in WV where I was raised. Supposedly, miners used to eat pepperoni with bread because it was so portable for working in the mines and then after noticing this a baker came up with pepperoni rolls.
In WV a lot of places use stick pepperoni for pepperoni rolls but I prefer sliced because it gives a more constant taste and the pepperoni has less tendency to come out while you are eating it.
