Default Petria is not well, worried Mum.

Hi' Eveyone.
I just typed a long post and it's disappeared. Two days ago I ran out of the dry puppy food I was giving to Petria for breakfast and sometimes at night with her dry food. I don't give that every night, sometimes chicken. I don't remember the name of the dry food as I put it in containers and threw the box out. I can find out though. I bought Pedigree dry puppy food. I also read a post that someone gave their Chi' carrot sticks and a little apple. I thought Petria would enjoy too, so 2 days ago gave her apple and carrot sticks. Yesterday I gave just apple. After the first night at 2am I heard her crying so I took her outside as she seemed to want to go potty, she was there for ages. I couldn't see what she did as it was dark, I looked when light and it was not really loose but more than usual and probably looser. Next morning there was a mess in her pen and she never does that. Last night I just gave her plain chicken breast no skin, but I did give her the dry food for breakfast. She seemed her usual happy playful self yesterday. This morning a BIG mess in the play pen, like diarrhoea everywhere. Could it be the apple and carrot or the sudden change in the dry food. I have not given her any breakfast as she just wants to sleep in her bed. Her nose is cool.
Advice appreciated.
Love, Joan.

Personally, I wouldn't give the apple or carrot for a few reasons. The first one being it has seemed to upset her digestive system. Secondly, the apple and carrots might make her "feel full" but she's probably not really getting any benefits from eating them. They slip right through so quickly they barely have time to digest (if at all). If the apples and carrots are pureed, then they are already broken down and the dog might reap some of the benefits, but it's still very minimal.
Also, if it wasn't the same Pedigree puppy food she is used to, that could have caused the problem too. On that subject, I might suggest you look into exchanging that bag of Pedigree for something a little more nutritional for her. There are toooons of threads on puppy food here.
She should pull out of it soon. I would keep giving her the boiled chicken no skin until she's back to normal. All the variety probably just threw her off a bit.
Hope she is well again soon!

Thank you so much for replying so soon. I thought I was doing the right thing by giving her the apple and carrot which was just for treats really during the day. Normally I give her liver treats but only when I am trying to train her to come etc. I will do as you suggest and just give chicken until she is better, and I will go and buy the other dry puppy food she was used to. I see a lot of brands on this forum that we don't have in Australia. I bought the Pedigree from the supermarket so will go back and buy the dry food from the Vet as before. I feel so badly for making my baby sick.
Love, Joan.

Don't feel too bad. I've done it, too.
Do you remember any of the other brands of puppy food that were available at your store?

Would you believe Petria is up and running around and dragging her stuffed toys around, she has other toys too. She is playing with my other Chi "Jacinta" too so I think she will be fine. I will never give her carrot and apple again, I was so worried. I can't remember what the brands were at supermarket, I think one was Purina but I will make a note next time. I had to go another Vet to get the dry food the breeder told me to buy but my Vet only sells Royal Canin puppy dry food and the ingredients sound horrible. I was told the first ingredient should say "meat, this Canin says maise and other dehydrated things plus beef pulp which I read was not good, it's so confusing. I think I better just give Petria chicken for her dinner tonight. Thank you so very much for easing my mind, she is so little I am constantly worrying about her.
Joan.

Haha, that's sounds about right. I'm glad she's feeling well so quickly! I've also read that some of the Royal Canines mixes don't have great ingredients, but there are a few (I can't remember which kinds at the moment) that are generally better than most other brands of kibble.

Yes, she seems fine now thank heaven. another thing I noticed yesterday, she is dragging her bottom on the floor, I think it's called scooting?. she just came in to my office where my compters are and did it in front of me. I give her Interceptor Chews, the orange ones for very small dogs. She has one every month on the first so I don't think she could have worms, surely. Now she is barking at me, obviously wants attention, she is soooo cute. I will be a basket case on the 13th Sept., as I've booked her to be spayed and microchipped.
Thanks again,
love, joan.

Her "scooting" could possibly be solved by having your vet express her anal glands. That is a common sign.
I just looked up your thread with pictures of Petria. She's darling!
