Unhappy Newbie with Potty Training Issues :(

Hey this is my first chi ( previous owner of a Rockweiler & Shitzhu ) . Her name is Fiesty. she's about 4 months. I've had her for almost a week now. The first few days she immediately took to using the doggy pads but she wouldnt poop on it ( poops outside ) . nd now she pees everywhere LITERALLY her bed,my bed,the floor,& the couch. she wont even go near the dog pad. so I put her in the playpen to monitor her so I'll learn her routine but she'll lay there nd when I take her out her bed smells like pee. . im kinda desperate. any advice would be helpful

Obviously I don't know your entire situation, but one thing I read before getting my new puppy (only 3 days ago) was that if you want them to learn to go outside, to not use puppy pads unless absolutely critical. It trains them to go in the house. Of course, some situations require it depending on your living situation.

I am pretty obsessive about taking my puppy out immediately after a serious play session and 20 minutes after eating. I'm sorry to hear about your situation. Sounds tough, but hopefully ya'll will get it figured out. I am certainly no expert! I just read and read prior to getting my puppy, and we have been incredibly blessed by her so far and cooperating with all the training we are doing.

Good luck!!

Hello Welcome and Congratulations. My Zoey poos outside and uses pads to pee on. When she was a pup she would have one pad for pee and one for poo. She would poo where she went poo. If you have yelled at her or punished her for peeing in the house and put her on the pad she may associate the pad with pad. I would totally start over with the training. Maybe tether her to you throughout the day so you can really keep an eye on her and if she starts sniffing around take her to the pad and if she goes on it praise praise and treats. Or use a kennel and put her on the pad everytime you bring her out of the kennel. Never use the kennel for punishment as this is their safe comfy place for them to go. Hang in there, it may take awhile. Are you using the scented pads? If not they make a spray to attract them to pee on the pads.

I have been crate training my 4 month old puppy and this has been working very well for me. I take him outside. I see you've mentioned that he poops outside but you're training him to use the pad also? I can see how that might be a smidge confusing for him. Mine still makes mistakes inside but as long as I take him out frequently we have a pretty easy time with training. Consistency is key however with ANYTHING you choose to train him so just dont give up. My boyfriend is so impatient with potty training but I'm not giving up with my little guy. He'll figure it out.

Welcome! Look under the article section and you will see a great potty training one near the top. Patience and diligence are key. Choose your method and stick with it so as not to confuse your pup (I prefer outside). It seems like a lot of work (well, I guess it is), but the payoff of a well trained pup is well worth it!
