Aw thank you for saving him! I do agree though that you should make sure to cover your bases that he doesn't already have a home somewhere with folks who miss him. It may not be the owners fault that the dog escaped, or got loose, etc. and they may very well be looking for him. I'd start by calling your local animal control; as well as nearby shelters and even vet clinics to see if anyone's reported a missing Chi. Don't describe color or anything like that; instead wait for people to call and make sure they can identify his color/markings, gender, etc. to make sure they're not just someone looking to swipe a free dog. In IL we have a "Lost Dogs" FB page too that is frequented so may be worth looking into there too. But again, never include a photo with any "Found!" Advertisements... just a brief description of breed, maybe even just say "Found Chihuahua - Call to Describe XXX" and leave your phone number there. It's great if they can eve provide picture proof that they have the dog. But, I would just make sure to check everywhere before getting your hopes up to keeping him. In my city you have 7 days. If you find a dog and within those 7 days (ensuring you checked with Animal Control, and they note it) and nobody has called them to claim, legally you can then keep or rehome the dog.
