Introducing myself
Hello,
Im new to the forum, and thought I would introduce myself. My name is Megan, and Im from Western PA, close to Pittsburgh.
My family has had chihuahuas for the majority of my life. Years ago, my parents bred show quality chihuahua's, but after a very bad car accident, they decided to keep their remaining dogs and retire them. When I grew up, moved out, and started a family of my own, the dogs stayed with my parents, they were too attached to let anyone leave. I can't blame them, they would have quite the empty nest. They currently have five Chihuahuas left, ranging from 12-16. Over thanksgiving they had to have their oldest girl put down due to rapidly progressing congestive heart failure. It was very hard on our entire family.
Now that my son is getting a little older, we decided that we would like to add a chihuahua to our home. The search began. I wanted a merle longhair male, and from a reputable breeder. We finally found a puppy, we're just waiting on him to get old enough to come home. Seems like such a long time, but it will be here before we know it.
Now, Im trying to get all of his supplies ready. It's been so long since Ive had a puppy, I hope im not forgetting anything. I could also use recommendations on online stores that sell quality chihuahua sized things. When my familys dogs were puppies and in extremely small sizes, we had a specialty pet store who could order anything we needed for us. They have since went out of business, and since my familys dogs are all adults, its not super hard to find things to fit them.
Ive ordered him a small crate, bully sticks, orbee balls, a small puppy kong, a fish chew, freeze dried liver treats, a cuz toy, stain and odor remover for accidents, a tube of nutrical, two sweaters, a collar that I hope will fit, and of course, we got him a leash, and a 12' long lead so I can take him to the park and play, but he's still leashed for safety. Im also looking into either one of those indoor potties that have the grass, or pee pads in a holder. I would like to train him to always go outside, but from what I can remember, as puppies they have super tiny bladders, and the pee pads are almost necessary for a while. I already have a big X pen he can use.
I would like to have him on raw, but with me having a curious toddler, its just not feasible for us. I will defiantly be doing a grain free kibble though, and raw meaty bones to chew, when supervised after my son goes to bed, so I can clean up good after and not worry about my son getting sick. I know some will think that is overkill, but about 6 weeks ago my son got very, very ill with an intestinal illness and was hospitalized for 5 days. I wont take any additional chances.
I do have a toddler son, but he has always done very well with the chihuahuas at my parents. He will always be directly supervised with the puppy, for both of their safety.
So, Hello from South Western PA
