I'd been thinking more and more seriously about getting a dog for a while. What I had in mind was a mid-sized mutt. I went to PetSmart one Saturday, just to look around. A Save-A-Life foster mom was seated there, with six or seven dogs of various breeds and sizes on leashes all around her. After saying hello, I sat down on the floor to see if anyone would come to me. I've never viewed chihuahuas very favorably, holding the usual stereotypes about them (i.e. yappy, nippy, "high-strung," etc.), but the sweetest, cutest little chihuahua girl climbed right into my lap and curled up there like she owned the place. The foster mom was surprised, and said she was usually very shy (which experience with other people who want to pet her has confirmed). In addition to falling in love with her immediately, I realized that, practically (i.e. I live in a small apartment, and other such considerations), she'd be the perfect little dog for me, and vice versa. I haven't owned her long, but so far that is proving to be true!
Here's my little Butterbeanie:
She's just amazingly gentle, quiet, calm, and sweet. For some reason, unfortunately, I can't get her to play with any toys; that's something I always enjoyed with my family's dogs when I was younger, and I admit to missing it a bit with her (then again, she's not a puppy--she's six years old). Also, I wish she would warm up a little more to some of the other people in my life who would love to hold and pet her, but she really is turning out to be a "daddy's little girl" who is very shy toward everyone else. These are relatively minor complaints, though. She's happily snoozing in my lap as I type, and I couldn't be happier to have her there and to know she's happy and comfortable.
This forum has already been very helpful to me, and I look forward to reading and participating more, so thanks!
