Default Hi from NewChiDad and Butterbean

I'd been thinking more and more seriously about getting a dog for a while. What I had in mind was a mid-sized mutt. I went to PetSmart one Saturday, just to look around. A Save-A-Life foster mom was seated there, with six or seven dogs of various breeds and sizes on leashes all around her. After saying hello, I sat down on the floor to see if anyone would come to me. I've never viewed chihuahuas very favorably, holding the usual stereotypes about them (i.e. yappy, nippy, "high-strung," etc.), but the sweetest, cutest little chihuahua girl climbed right into my lap and curled up there like she owned the place. The foster mom was surprised, and said she was usually very shy (which experience with other people who want to pet her has confirmed). In addition to falling in love with her immediately, I realized that, practically (i.e. I live in a small apartment, and other such considerations), she'd be the perfect little dog for me, and vice versa. I haven't owned her long, but so far that is proving to be true!

Here's my little Butterbeanie:

She's just amazingly gentle, quiet, calm, and sweet. For some reason, unfortunately, I can't get her to play with any toys; that's something I always enjoyed with my family's dogs when I was younger, and I admit to missing it a bit with her (then again, she's not a puppy--she's six years old). Also, I wish she would warm up a little more to some of the other people in my life who would love to hold and pet her, but she really is turning out to be a "daddy's little girl" who is very shy toward everyone else. These are relatively minor complaints, though. She's happily snoozing in my lap as I type, and I couldn't be happier to have her there and to know she's happy and comfortable.

This forum has already been very helpful to me, and I look forward to reading and participating more, so thanks!

Welcome and good on you for giving that sweet girl a good home! It sounds like you're already smitten with her. She's so cute!

Some dogs just don't enjoy toys, which can be a bummer if that's something that you enjoy. I know that some dogs only like specific toys too, or won't play until they're totally comfortable in a home. Some chis ready attach to one person, but if you work at it, she'll become more receptive to others at least, especially if she sees them a lot. Chis are such amazing dogs as I'm sure you already know. I, too, thought of chis to be little yappy dogs before I really met one, and I haven't met one yet that's fit into the stereotypical criteria.

Hi and welcome! I absolutely adore her name and she is such a cutie pie! Our Gidget loves her toys (but as you can see she is not a chihuahua), but my Lulu is scared to death of toys and is a professional lap dog. lol I know you will never regret a day of rescuing Butterbean (I just love saying that!) and hope to see lots more pics of her.

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone! Butterbean really is a lapdog, which is fine by me. Any time I feel like petting her, there she is! Sometimes she makes things a little harder than they have to be, by insisting on resting her chin in the crook of my arm while I'm typing, but (so far at least) I find that more endearing than bothersome.

A lot of threads here have helped me understand the specifics of the breed, and either reassured me about something or helped me make better-informed decisions when I wasn't sure about something. For example, I foolishly bought a pack of rawhide sticks early on, but since reading up on rawhide here, I'm much more careful and sparing about them, and let her chew on other things you all have recommended, like bully sticks, pigs ears, and hooves.
