Because I am planning on putting the dog into a play pen when I am not home, I am wondering if Chis are good jumpers. How high should the sides of the play pen be?
Welcome to CP, and bless you for planning to adopt a rescue! We adopted our little Chica (an approximately 2 year old female) from a local humane society back in April. Chica isn't much of a jumper, so I can't help you there, but I have heard it's important to get a playpen that doesn't have the type of sides that are easy to climb up.

I have been looking at different play pens for dogs and reading about them on the internet. I found in many customer comments that they ran into that exact problem that you discribed: dogs climbing out of their pens.

Getting a new dog is so exciting! Regarding jumping/climbing, it definitely depends on the dog. The gates we use on both of our staircases are no higher than a couple of feet (which a chi could easily jump) but ours won't.
Rocky is not so much of a jumper. At my parents house we always have a really small fence to keep him away from the rest of the garden. If he stands on his back feet he can even look over that fence but never even tried jumping over it. He does have LP though so not sure whether that's why he is not trying?!
