Question First Time Chi Owner

Hello fellow Chi lovers,

I am new here and signed up because I thought "what better way is there to learn about my new Chihuahua puppy than from other Chihuahua owners?"

I have a four and a half month old, tan, apple head Chi named Rooney.

My current issue with Rooney is that he seems to be picky when it comes to treats. I've bought him two kinds of treats so far and he didn't like either of them! Any suggestions?

Thanks

Welcome to CP! Some dogs are super picky with treats. What kinds have you tried? I know some people on here just use regular food as treats.

Thanks for.your quick response, Krystal! Well the only treats he liked were Old Mother Hubbard's baked puppy treats. They're crunchy and have apple and chicken and other flavors. Lately he's been getting bored of them though. So I tried chewy training treats with liver flavor and turkey flavor for the second time around but no luck. Regular food doesn't work as he only seems to like it for feeding time. What I did recently discover is cheese. He lives it! But I was hoping there were some actual doggy treats I could carry around with me.

Gemma was picky with treats too at first, but now she's kind of a chow-hound for anything except Ziwipeak, lol. I just carried around pieces of her Acana kibble for training and that worked for us.

Now as an afternoon treat, I just started giving her these 100% dried duck breast fillets and she really enjoys them and they clean her teeth well. They are big so I just rip them in half and she will be chewing on a piece for 30 minutes before she's done. You could rip off tiny pieces to use as training treats. This is the link to their website if you want to see:

Gemma loves cheese too, but that isn't ideal for carrying around in your pockets all the time. I would try something like dried meat/jerky treats. Along with being tasty, they're very healthy as well.

Funny you should mention that! Today at the pet store I was torn between the turkey flavored treats I got him and some turkey jerky... I had a gut feeling I should have gone with the jerky considering the turkey treats I got him had the same texture as the last ones he didn't like. Good to know. Thanks for your input!

Yes!!! Duck jerky is the business!! And they have these AMAZING fish dog treats that they go crazy for, they are called; Fish Skin Chew. AMAZING! But they do make your baby's breath smell like fish haha but it's soooooo good for them too.

Hi Rooney there are also some great homemade recipes for treats you can make you're self. My Abby loves the Blue Buffalo Banana & Yogurt mini bars. All good stuff. I've only had Abby just over 5 weeks. She's a rescue about 1 1/2-2 yrs old so im going through the trial and error thing too. I was lucky to that her rescue society person gave me some of about 5 different treats and the Duck jerky was among them and she loves it too. Also she loves cheese. not too much obviously. Don't want our beautiful chi's getting constipated lol.
