Default New member/Chi-X owner (with some questions)

Hi everyone. My name is Jessica, and I recently adopted a Chi/Mini-poodle cross I've since named Tater Tot. I was coming on this site to use it as a resource for helping me raise my puppy.

I recently learned that I might need more help than I thought. When I bought the puppy, I was told she was 8 weeks old. Not ideal, I understand, but manageable. Today I wrote to the lady who had her to ask what the birthday was. She told me Nov 1.

I don't understand how she can think a pup born Nov. 1 is 8 weeks old - this is basic math here, but she insists that both facts are true. I have to assume she's bad at counting and what I have is a six week old pup.

I have noticed she's not fantastic about drinking water, and now I have a suspicion as to why.

Anyway, I don't want my dog to grow up poorly-adjusted or with pathologies related to an early separation from her litter. What can I do to help her? She's so tiny and she has only had her 1st round of shots. Obviously Parvo is a concern.

Thanks for any and all advice!

She must be very bad at counting!! My breeder also told me Honey was 8 weeks, but I suspect she was nearer 6. She has a good few issues now, but I wouldn't be without her for the world.
My only tip? Socialise!
No matter if you think you are doing enough socialising and showing new situations, double what you are doing!

I would be feeding this baby every 3-4 hours, and leaving some food down for her at night. Where are you keeping her at night and during the day, when you can't watch her? As for house training, a playpen would be ideal. I would take her out with me as much as possible, but not on the ground yet, until she's had at least one more vaccination. Puppy school would be ideal. (they usually only require one shot to attend) Parvo would be picked up more easily from parks, and vet's offices! Make sure she is in a carrier (ferret carriers are just right!) when you go. Good luck to you.

Congratulations! I got Ike at 7 weeks he was suppose to be 8 weeks. I had to sit and feed him his food by hand, because he acted like he didn't know what to do. He wouldn't go to the water bowl himself, I had to take him too it and make sure he drank it. He was underweight and the Vet gave him some liquid vitamins to build him up and get more of an appetite. So monitor you new baby close. A Vet visit is in order to have have him checked out. Ike also had a bacterial infection. The woman also said he had he first shots , but had to paper work to prove it. So our Vet started with him from scratch.

Hello and thank you for the responses.

I offer food frequently, and put her on the puppy pad after every nap or meal so she can go. At night, she sleeps with me (she's really good and settles right down when the lights go out, and only gets up once or twice needing to pee).

She poops about once a day; it's a really dark brown but not black, so I think that's okay?

I feed her Wellness. I crush up the dry food with a mortar and pestle and soak it in water to keep her hydrated. She's not super fond of the food, so I sometimes throw some bits of grass-fed beef in, or some meat juices on top to make it more appetizing - should I just go get wet food and see if she likes that better? She really isn't eating very much, but I have to remind myself she's still not even 2 lbs. ...and anyway, everything seems to be in order. I've just begun tracking her weight to make sure she's on the up and up.

I've been taking her out and introducing her to people (but no dogs). She's so cute; she's the life of the party, and she's really good with everyone. I've been trying to get as great a diversity of people to interact with her as possible. So far, so good.

She naps often, but she's very alert and playful when she's awake, so it's probably not lethargy. I'm just so paranoid of parvo...

I really want to get her to meet other dogs, I just don't know many people who own dogs, so it's hard to do it safely, yanno?

Anyway here's a photo of her.

Thanks again for reading.
