Default After the death of an owner...

My wife's grandma passed away this morning at home. Her two chis (Spud and Libby) laid on her bed nonstop since she became bedridden but since they took her away this morning they've been having a hard time. They're anxious, won't leave her room and when you put Libby down she hyperventilates. Anyone have any suggestions on how to help them cope? More so for Libby. They've got one of her blankets and Spud is doing okay lying on it. They're not going to make them leave her room if they don't want to but we don't know what to do for Libby.

I am so sorry for your loss.
How old are Spud and Libby?

they sound like they are going through what us human do...i would give them time and space. but I would also go in their and make sure they are doing alright. Talk to them give them some food boil chicken because friend with them...what ever your grandma did I would do that too...put your grandma blankets down for them to lay one do wash them and let the two sleep on them. it will take them a few day or weeks to understand their mom is not coming home. I am sorry for your lose and their but they need to have their sadness just like we human do...good luck

I agree with Jessica32. Give blankets or things that smell like grandma & don't wash them. Hold them, kiss them & love them. They go through a grieving process just like we do. If grandma took them for walks, maybe you could try seeing if they want to go for a walk. If they have special toys that grandma played with them with, you could see if they want to play. I would give them a little time & wouldn't push them into any of this, but you could try. I wouldn't let this go on for too long, because many have died of broken hearts. Sounds like Libby might need a little more cuddling & talking & kissing. Since you're so attentive to their situation, I strongly believe they are in great hands & will come around. Time heals all wounds.

That's so sad - I agree with the posts above, great advice.

It must be so hard trying to keep everything going at such a difficult time.

Thanks everyone. Libby and Spud are both about 6. We finally put them in her room and closed the door to protect them from the commotion for a while. Libby did calm down and now they're both outside with us. We might be taking them for a while, partly because they need to be broken of a "people food" habit and need to lose a lot of weight. Otherwise they'll be left to hang around with her blanket in her room as long as they want.

I was more concerned about Libby's hyperventilating than anything else. Turns out my mother-in-law has a couple of doses of tranquilizer prescribed for Libby. She's going to call the vet to make sure she can use it if Libby gets miserably anxious again.

Poor babies, can you get any rescue remedy? I think it would help her immensely.
