Today our 8 month old Maltese, Gidget, had 10 baby teeth pulled (vet said they were never coming out on their own and were messing up her permanent teeth). Well, we got her back this afternoon and they said she would be very sleepy/sedated acting for a day or two. She is!!! and she doesn't want to eat anything. The vet said that is OK is she doesn't eat until tomorrow even though she didn't have anything since last night because of surgery. I am worried because she is only 4lbs 2oz and I worry about hypoglycemia--vet said not to worry. Has anybody been through surgery and gotten them back that day? Is all this normal? Can she go until tomorrow if she won't eat or drink? I really like this vet but I just started using him and have only seen him one other time with Lulu (I was referred to him, and was not happy with my last vet.) Ya'll talk to me!! I know she's not a chi, but I'm a nervous wreck!!!

Her mouth must be very sore...imagine getting 10 teeth pulled out..so I can see why she is not hungry. Maybe get her some baby food, which she doesn't have to chew, and keep her hydrated using a sryinge with water. Hope she feels better soon.

I just looked back at my computer from checking on her and she actually ate her rice, peas, and chicken broth mixture. She is even acting more awake. Thank you so much for caring. I know it must hurt and it breaks my heart, but I was told she really needed it. I hope I was advised correctly--all you can do is trust you have made the right choice after you have done all your research.

I just had two teeth pulled and was so bad, I didn't want to eat or drink, come to find out I had dry socket and took 14 days to stop that bad pain, so give her few days she be OK. Good to hear she did eat.

If she is eating thats a great sign. She will be fine. Don't worry...I know easier said than done.

I had a dry socket once and ate the whole bottle of perc's in a night, 1000 times worse than child birth and my boys were 10+ pounders, induced no epidural. I'd have 5 in a row that size before one more dry socket, and not even think twice about it.

Her little mouth is probably just a throbbing.And I can see him saying no food tonight as you probably wouldn't want any particles to enter the area where teeth were extracted.

Have faith, she is going to be fine & she did eat a bit and take in some broth so a night of rest will probably make a world of difference. She'll probably still be sore tomorrow though ~ that would be like a person getting dentures almost, as that's a lot of teeth coming out and I know I have heard several people say that pain is just horrendous.

My Pom had 7 teeth pulled once she was older.
The first day was a nightmare, but on day two she was back to normal.
If your baby doesn't eat much you can always add a little sugar to her water,
in case you are concerned about hypoglycemia. Also when my Pom had her
teeth pulled I put her on wet food only for 2 weeks(vet's advice). Imagine how
painful chewing is to her! Especially once the meds wear off. Also i hope he gave
you some antibiotics, because the risk of infection is high. If he did not, call tomorrow
and ask why not. Maybe in your pup's case there was no need, but better know for
sure. Give your baby lots of extra love and let her rest. She'll heal fast and will feel
much better with these bothersome teeth gone. You did the right thing, you are a good mama!
