Keep at it and be gentle. Brush burn is very painful and can traumatize a dog permanently, and on a black coat the blood won't be obvious.

I've seen some pretty nasty brush burn before and when I was new I did it once (not badly thank god, would have probably given up then and there) to a severely matted dog. It's very easy to do unfortunately so be careful!
