I have had rats since before I had dogs and even before I was dating my husband. They have always been a big part if my life and I have always enjoyed so much their company. Well after a long line of rats we were down to one lonly older guy named Eggplant. He was 4, and we had him longer than we have had Kerri. His life started in a feeder bin and he and his brother T.O. lived in a giant cage together for the last year after their companions, my spayed females passed. It was an absurdly large cage for two, then one rat- once I had 8 girls living in there comfortably! Eggplant looked like he was a young rat until the day he passed, we were talking on friday about how good he looked. In fact he is the only rat I ever had that didn't need a trip to the vet ever. I went up to give him a little bit of my taco yesterday and I noticed he was holding his head sideways and moving a little funny but he took the food and ate it. I only left long enough to google when the vet opened in the morning then decided I'd sit next to the cage to see how he was doing and read a book for a few hours. When I got back he was curled up sleeping but maybe 5 minutes later he got up, ran in a disoriented circle and passed out. I assume he had a series of strokes but I am not sure. I am just happy that in his entire life he only was ever sick for the last hour (if only everyone was so lucky) and his last meal was one of his favorites- a bit of corn tortilla.
We had agreed to take a little break from rodents, Nova is a lot of work and we really need to do some major re-working of our aquarium decor and don't have a lot of extra time but I don't know. It has only been one day and I already miss not just Eggplant but having a tiny rodent around in general. I'm not sure I really can handle a rodent free life for too long!
Thanks for listening to my rambling everyone, this has been much harder on me than I thought it would.
