Default Ok how about this....

I've been trying to find local co-ops and such ( thanks Tracy for that
rec ), for other sources of meat. Not a lot of luck so far, but I did
find someone who sells Raccoon, cleaned/dressed and fresh frozen.

I'm not sure if I can get past the cute little face thing, and
then I'm wondering also if anyone else has ever used Raccoon ?

The guy is telling me lots of Raw feeders buy this from him and
that it's a great source of red meat.

No no no!!!

Raccoons carry a very very nasty roundworm that is almost impossible to get rid of. The cysts can't be killed by freezing. It has been studied because it is so horrible and so hardy. NEVER feed raccoon.

Sounds to me like he is a trapper that is looking for a way to unload the carcass after stripping off the fur. I feel sorry for the raw feeders that are buying this meat. It's very dangerous to feed. Not only for the dog, but for the people handling it.

Here's a link that talks about it and another that discusses this deadly parasite to PEOPLE that is carried in the raccoons brain....

What part of Florida are you in? I'll try and get some leads for you.

Wow, I am so glad you told me that. I'm going to tell
the guy about this, hopefully he didn't know and I hope
he will not sell it to anyone else.

I'm in Lakeland, which is in Central Florida, just west of
the Tampa Bay area.

I'm doing fine purchasing meats from supermarkets and
my new local meat market friend who is ordering me beef
heart and kidneys. I'm just a bargain shopper and always
looking for a better/smarter deal.

Christa, were did you find this guy? Online?
I caution you to be very careful when it comes to raw dealers.
Some folks get their meat from questionable sources or mix it with god knows what.
Here in Quebec it is popular to mix in cardboard into the pre-made raw mixes.
Don't know if people do this in Florida, but there are scam artists everywhere,
so better safe than sorry. Do not buy unless you are 100% aware of the source.
Personally I am not too fond of pre-made anyway, I think you'll be better off buying
from you local market and preparing it yourself. Takes more time, but isn't so bad once you get the hang of it.

Sending you a PM about a friend of mine in FL who has some nice hook ups! She's about an hour from you.

Tracy - Thanks again for the PM!

LS - I have never heard of people mixing cardboard in, that
is awful. I actually met this person through a friend of mine.

When it comes to what Mimi eats, I feed cuts of meat
nothing ground up so I know exactly what it is she is
eating. She loves Cornish Hens, she loves beef, lamb
and pork are ok but she's not as crazy about them as the
other two. My biggest challenge has been organs other than kidneys.
I'm guessing that's everyone's challenge. That's the main
reason I have been trying to "network".

As for the guy with the Raccoon meat, I spoke to him
yesterday and explained to him what I had read in the articles
Tracy posted. He told me he had no idea. I know he and his
family are hunters so I asked him to contact me when he had
venison. I really hope he did not know all those things, but
I plan on talking to my friend who introduced me to this person
as well.

Here's an idea! To save money & buy quality meats, we go to a local farm where we know the cows are free-roaming and cared for properly. We have one slaughtered. We actually go in halves with my brother which also helps cut costs down. When they butcher the cow they package it up. We tell the butcher how we want the meat packaged (ex. ground beef--1 lb packs, 4 steaks/pack, etc.). I give Midgie the beef liver and some of the stew meat cubes.
You also might be able to go to a butcher and ask for discounts on meat from whenever he butchers something.
