over 3000 members, and only 400 are considered active..that's ridiculous!

I can't stand when people join a forum and never even make 1 post.

I thought your question was interesting as I have a small christian forum, and the same thing happens there. I actually thought it was because it was religious and after all... who wants to be bothered with religion.

But then I figured the percentage of active users to # of members on both this forum and my forum and voila! They are identical! The only difference is that my membership is tiny.

Soooooooo, in summation, I'm guessing that is the nature of the beast (forum)! People would rather lurk than post, and that's O.K. by me.

I think people might be too intimidated to post. I know when I first joined it was a little overwhelming since there are so many members and posts active but if they just introduce themselves and jump in it's easier than they think.

Yup, I joined forums and never posted before. This is actually the first forum I ever posted on. I didn't even know the proper "forum etiquette" and I don't think I even introduced myself in the newbie section when I first started.

Same here, I'm a member of many forums but I don't post in all of them. Only those where I feel comfortable, and it can take me a few months to start posting.

I am a member of a couple of forums as well, and there are some that I have never posted in. It is kind of hard for me to post when I do not feel comfortable in a forum.

Its hard to start posting in a new forum. Especially when it seems like everybody already know eachother and you're the outsider. I've been a member in a few other forums and never posted. I agree with the comfortability thing. This is actually the only forum I've ever felt comfortable enough to post in.
