Default Does clothes help with heat?

Hey all,

So, the idea that sweaters help our tiny breed during the cold is a no brainer. But does it help with heat?

My previous dogs never wore anything. Shiloh wore a little cloth dress on her first outing today. We remained seated under the shade and she stayed on my lap or on the bench so no running around. She also drank plenty of fresh water and got sprayed with a mister but was still panting copiously. I think we were only out for... 30-45 minutes.

I'm wondering if perhaps the little dress might have been a contributor to the heat instead of detracting from it. Thoughts?

I wouldn't put anything on a dog in the heat of the summer. Watch the color of her tongue when she pants. A deepening red means she is too hot. The lenght also means too hot if it is long.

Thanks for the replies =)

Tongue was normal and she cooled off relatively quickly once we got in the car. I'd been worried about potential sunburn (couldn't remember if this place had enough shaded areas), hence putting something on her. Won't be doing that again~

I dress mine year round. I live in Chicago so our weather is very mixed. On really hot days we skip the clothes and accessorize with cute harnesses and leashes instead 😄. If I'm in the mood to dress them on a hot day, they are in air conditioning.

If you're worried about sunburns, you can get sunscreen for dogs. I've also heard about cooling vests. I have no experience with these, but a friend of mine has one for her dog who doesn't handle heat very well. She said it's helped her, but yeah normal clothes will only make a dog warmer.

I only dress mine on the cold days as well. Here in the spring and especially summer it stays so hot and humid I think they would pass out from the heat if I even put a thin top on them.

As everyone has said, clothes in Summer (if you live in a warm climate) are best left for air-conditioned rooms. I live in Australia and it gets stinking hot in Summer. It's so hot that the dogs are only walked in early morning or in the evening once the sun has gone down. Like Meoshia I usually I accessorise with cute harnesses or collars during Summer and they pretty much always wear a cool coat for walks or training in Summer. I use the Hurtta vests which are awesome and even have a clip that allows you to use them as a harness vest. They really make a difference and I have been in training classes where my Chi is wearing his vest, not panting and looking comfortable while the other dogs in the class are panting and having a hard time. This is the one I use:
