Default All settled in but have a couple questions!

Well we have little Harleigh home and all settled in, she is just so precious! At first I was little worried because she wasn't interested in eating, but I picked up some Nutri-cal to get us over the hump and she is eating fairly well now I think! She is so clever, already responding to her name and using the piddle pad consistently! She's very playful, my shih tzus aren't yet sure what to make of her though! lol

Now for the questions! My breeder unfortunately didn't start the puppies drinking water because they were getting water in their watered down kibble. I'm having a hard time getting her interested in drinking water...any suggestions? She seems to be getting enough water as she is definitely peeing, but I'd like her to learn to drink water.

And, we are feeding Acana Small Breed Puppy kibble, soaked right now. How much should she be eating per day? I think she is probably eating about 3 tbsp/day all told, plus a teaspoon or so of canned Caesar puppy lamb & rice mixed in. I've also been giving her a pea sized amount of Nutri-cal once/day. Like I said, she is peeing and pooping regularly...just looking for advice as I am used to raising Siberian Huskies & Shih Tzus!

If you got this far...lol...here is a photo from today...we just love her so, so much!

What kind of bowl are you using? Could be afraid of it being too big? Try using a saucer first.

How precious!

I know with my small pups they don't like deep bowls, even if there is yummy yummy food in it. I use shallow bowls for their food so they can eat everything better and for the water they got used to a big open bowl for a bigger dog, but not too deep lol.

Since she's still a puppy, I would try a saucer, like Hully suggested. Then get a shallow bowl when she's used to the saucer.

However, if she watches the Huskies and the Shih Tzus where they drink, she should end up learning where the main water bowl is for everyone if you share the water bowl.

Adorable little thing!

Your quoted bit above.....I never thought of this from a puppy/breeder standpoint. My Dorothy (we got her at 2.5 yrs old as a rescue) will NOT drink water. She just won't. I also add water to her food so I know she's getting enough but still - it would be great if she actually drank water. But I never thought of her not being "trained" as a puppy to drink water.

She's adorable! What a sweet little face she has. She looks so soft to touch and has such pretty coloring.
She should eat 3-4 times per day. An all life stages food would be better, no need to feed puppy food only. The kibbles of Origen are already small. I'd ditch the Caesar food completely. It is not the greatest of brands. There are much better high quality canned foods out there. Check dogfoodanalysis.com or you can check dogfoodadvisor.com for food reviews. I use tiny sized porcelain bowls for my dogs. I think she will learn to drink water eventually. You can try adding a little broth to her water just for a short time. Thanks for sharing the pics and an update, was wondering what happened to yuh!

She has such an adorable little foxy face!! I agree with the saucer or shallow bowl and adding a little broth to the water for flavor. Best of luck with your new baby!! They grow so fast!
