Default First neutering.....that was tough!

Chico is the first dog I've ever owned that I took to get neutered. Vet said all went well. They even took the time to remove a couple baby teeth that didn't fall out when his new ones grew in. Once we got him home we just felt so bad. He was all shriveled up with a fear/pain/what did they do to me look the entire evening and next day. No eating, drinking, nothing. All he wanted was to be held and snuggled......which of course we all took turns doing. The 2nd day was a little better. He started drinking again, and would walk short distances, but still wouldn't eat. The 3rd day, to our delight, he had eaten his food during the night, drank some more, and was getting around MUCH better. The 4th day (today), he is pretty well back to his normal self, running around, jumping into our laps, and playing with his toys. Just really wish I had done more research, and had been better prepared for those first couple days. Those were pure torture. Don't get me wrong, we know the procedure is for the better for him over the long term, and we're happy we had it done, but gosh.....those first couple of days were tough!

Yep, I totally hear you! When we had Tinkerbell spayed, as she was our very first dog, I just about lost it when she got home. I still remember bringing her home and she was so sad and upset, she curled up in a ball with me on the bed and she was shaking like crazy. I cried for hours because I felt so bad. But she slept for a few hours and when she woke up, she was back to her usual self. Still, I have never forgotten her reaction or how terrible and guilty it made me feel. When we had Gizmo neutered, it was the same thing. I knew what to expect, to a point - he was our first male, and different surgery of course - but still upset me beyond belief when he came home that first night and wasn't feeling well. Next day, regular old Gizmo.

We just went through it two weeks ago again with Finley, and again I was totally prepared to want to die out of guilt for making him feel bad when he got home. Not only did he get neutered, but he had a hernia repair surgery at the same time, so two procedures done. However, he was totally fine! We brought him home around dinner time, and he was clearly stoned up until bedtime that day - little wobbly, slightly droopy eyes, but seemed happy enough. By the next morning he was totally his spastic little self picking fights with his brother again. So he did really well, I was so happy I didn't have to feel miserable! Though I did worry about it for weeks before...
