Default Any ideas?

1) Our dogs name is onyx. She doesn't answer to it. Would it be wrong to change her name? She was my grandmother's dog. She couldn't take care of her so we took her. I think Sophie would be a cute name for her. Is it wrong to change her name?

2) she has NO training at all! She is horrible on the leash, runs out the door as soon as it opens, can't sit, stay or come when called. She barks at dogs, people and lunges at cars going by. I was thing maybe a pets mart class would be good for her. She can play with other dogs and we can learn some tips to make her a better dog? Any advice on these?
Thank you

Sure you can change a dog's name, but you have to train her to know her own name (probably why she didn't answer to Onyx). Just start by saying her new name, and when she looks at you give her a treat.

I've never taken any pet store classes, but there are a lot of good videos on Youtube that can get you started with easier things like sit and come. I taught mine to sit before exiting doors after he bolted a few times. Traffic is a huge cause of death for dogs.

Many people who adopt dogs change their names. I think it's ok, especially seeing as she doesn't answer to her current one.

As for the rest, it sounds like she needs a lot of training. I would start with the basic just like with a puppy. Sit, stay, come here and teaching her her name. With yummy training treats like boiled chicken pieces or cheese. A training class could help too, but I agree with the advice above, there are so many great videos online about training.

When you say she's horrible on the leash, do you mean that she pulls? I find the best way for that is to stop and stand still until the dog calms down. Then praise and give a treat. Restart walking and ask her to 'heel'. If she walks nicely, praise and give a treat. As soon as she pulls again, stop ad restart the same process. It's frustrating, but eventually they get bored of stopping and learn. lol This works for other leash issues like refusing to walk to too.

Yes she pulls, she lunges at cars, barks at anyone * person or dog* who is in sight. I'm sure I could figure it out on my own but thought maybe socializing with other dogs might help her. I'll start working with her until after her surgery. Is it better to use a harness or collar with toy breed?

Please choose a harness. A collar can do terrible damage to a chi.

Thank you that's what I thought but wanted to make sure I was doing it right. This is my first tiny dog so I'm lost lol. We will go get her one tomorrow. She also has a retractable leash would a regular one better? I've never used a retractable before..

Retractable leashes are just awful IMO. I'd use a regular leash. Those retractable ones just don't give you any real control over your dog, and if anything happens suddenly, it's basically impossible to do much about it with those things.

I totally agree! We will definitely be getting her a leash and harness tomorrow along with some treats and work on some training. She is a pretty good dog just needs a little working with.
