Unhappy I've created a whiner

Ugh.......

We are in the process of selling our home. We listed in early February. It still hasn't sold. Needless to say, Dorothy has been coming to the office every day.
That means she has basically not been alone hardly at all since the beginning of February. I have two older kids so even when I go out there is usually someone home.

Now when we leave her alone she whines at the door. I can hear her yipping like a puppy and whining.

It's heartbreaking.

Ours does that too. She used to going everywhere with her previous owner.

Can you leave her in a pen? Laundry room? Somewhere that is small and cozy. Give her a special toy (like a frozen kong) when you leave. Just say "see you later, and go. No lingering. Have the kong toy ONLY for when you leave. A frozen one will last a little longer that one that is not. Fill it with some kibble and pour in a little broth and freeze. Or peanut butter and freeze.

Dorothy has ZERO food motivation. No treats, nothing. Heck, it's hard enough to get her to eat twice a day. I have never had a dog who could care less about food.

what about a toy? Anything you can think of that would distract her for a few minutes, while you leave? If nothing works, then tincture of time will work. Just wait her out, and forget the scratching and crying.

mine have never done this but I've always had at least 2. I wonder if you added a 2nd one if that would stop the whining . maybe she needs a playmate

Our first has done this for some years now but will stop after some minutes now. When we added the second one a couple years ago, it seemed better for just a short time but now we have two whiners (smile). It took the second one some time to attach to us but when she did and when they began having little sibling rivalry bouts the whining began for both. We will take our oldest one with us most nights-our second one will not whine for that but does still give us the hurt look at the door when we leave her behind. My older kids have pretty much told the chi's 'no' and take them to their beds to let them lay on if they don't stop the whining after some minutes. Not a helpful 'how to stop a whiner' post but definately a commiserative one.
