Default Pet limit laws by state

Is anyone aware of how this can be stopped? We are looking to move our family and have been seeing new homes in upstate NY. After we visited our first home, we had a whole new category on top of our most important feature list. I never thought to be limited in the home I chose based on the pet limit per city. It's frightening to me actually because many cities had no limits and then imposed them; forcing owners to choose the pets they want to keep. I have 3 chihuahuas-one is under 2 lbs and doesnt even bark. They have been loved and vet cared for. They are always indoors except the dog park and never without us-they are really our babies. How can anyone think to do this to a person? I'm one of thousands (even many on this site) that would be really affected by this. There are more states being added to this insane law every 6 months. This scares me to death about purchasing any home in any area. Any feedback or experience with this? Anyone know of any petitions or organizations trying to halt this?

Our city has a limit too. My condo has a limit also. I have very understanding neighbors. I have 4 dogs and one cat. Only the one dog goes out. She is my roommates Sheltie. My chi's just are house dogs. No one seems to care. Vet has never sent anything to the state, I gather. Rabies vaccines are staggered, so that isn't much help to the state.

If I were you, I'd ask a realtor about the enforcing of that law. A lot of states, and counties have limits, and unless there is a hording situation, no one really enforces them. Good luck.

Thanks Susan. I think that's a great idea; I didn't think about the enforcement of the issue. It did get us to branch out a bit and find a few homes with a bit more land in the outer parts of the towns we are looking at. There seems to be less problems all around with rural areas.

Susan, are you in Canada or a northern area? I somehow got that impression. If so, I was wondering how your babies fare in the winter. The rural areas are a bit different in their heating. We still made sure there is at least one area that are just for the chis and can be heated well but I am really worried about Bella where there is more snow. Lolli should be fine with a coat and not going out in the winter months but Bella shakes here in Fl at 75 degrees without her shirt or little sweater and lives in our sling or blanket. I hate to bother you so much but you seem to have a lot of experience and really great advice with the care of your babies. Bella wont be going out unless summer and she doesnt need to-she is very small and has very little fur. She is most times in a sling or stroller and prefers it. We want to even transition right because she is so nervous for any little noise. we are very careful but the move and climate change is pretty extreme. We are preparing for every precaution even on the trip up.

Thanks in advance so much-I am asking different places that could know but getting very little help back and we wont purchase a home unless its what can be best for the chis as well as the family.

Fannie, I am in Joliet IL which is southwest of Chicago, about 50 miles. I have always had more dogs than the condo/city allowed. I do have a double wire exercise pen, which I use in the summer. Problem is that I am allergic to mosquito bites/and or other biting insects. I have to sit outside, because we do have hawks. So this summer they just didn't go out. I felt a little bit guilty, but they adjusted very well. I have never taken my chi's outside in the winter. They do not need sweaters inside, as my house is heated to 74 in the winter. Airconditioning set at 78.

Hopefully you will find a house where you can live without having feelings of 'oh my goodness, what happens IF someone finds out about my dogs"! My neighbors all have dogs/cats and are very caring. Of course I don't let our dogs bark very long (it bothers me!). I did ask them before we got another Sheltie (my roommates dog) and no one cared. I did NOT ask the condo board however! I'm sure they know, but as long as no one complains---.

I live in a pet limit area. I do not have more than limit but I DO have illegal animals.

Like you, it never occurred to me to check in a farming town WHAT I could have. Neighbors have chickens and like I said it's a farm town. Imagine my surprise. My chickens are illegal. I have been able to get away with the hens but not the rooster- he lives with my dad now.
I also have a bunch of snakes. Now, they are all types of snake that are typical pets. Surprise. My town has a ban on all constricting snakes. That means even tiny species are banned.

Oops. So now I have a house with a bunch of secret snakes.

My city has a limit of 6 dogs - if you want more than that you have to get a kennel license.

Just remember with keeping illegal animals, if you get caught with them, they will be confiscated and euthanized. Sadly, I've seen it happen to a friend who instead of turning in a baby raccoon that she cared for decided to raise it and keep it as a pet. It was really sad when FGC came and took him, and they flat out told her that they would have to put him down. They don't screw around.

I am pretty sure many people here keep these guys here- you can get them at pet stores. It's just a weird law. I doubt it's enforced but we don't take the larger guys outside without a carrier anyway.

If something happened I could send em to a friend for a while.

Like, you could go to petco and purchase a sand boa- a sand boa is a constrictor. Full size is around 2.5 feet in length. But under this (very odd) law, that is also not legal because ALL constrictors are illegal no matter what.

Being as my largest is a common species (red tail boa) which is readily available at petco, there's no reason they would ever confiscate or mess with them.

Six dogs is the best limit I've seen anywhere. We even looked at my home town and the limit was two, period. We also were checking laws about chickens and hens in one of the larger cities up north. When we looked for that law, we found out we couldn't even have a garden with vegetables. That floored us; this was my husband's biggie (frankly becoming mine as well) that he wanted to do. It's really insane.

What I'm seeing the more I read about the pet limits is that no one cares so much unless you have a dog that has created disturbances and they don't tend to be small dogs either. We did read a few stories that were appalling about some very good pet owners whom had their dogs taken to shelters. A couple that went to lawyers and a small percentage that ended up getting it changed through the courts. This is appalling actually. Give dogs to shelters or euthanize instead of stay with good families? There are still many places that just punish bad pet owners-the logical thing to do
; why go to the extreme the other way?
