At the moment I have 3 step in harnesses (Sunshine yesterday chewed on 1, so I had to throw it) And 1 roman harness, it's the brand Kong and was a bit high price (for me)
Anyways, if I feel like the dogs "need" a roman harness I'd buy a cheap one as it's for when their in the backyard (a lot of dirt)
I read there is no neck component to step in harnesses, and they may be a better choice for dogs with neck issues. Is this true/ make sense?
My dogs are also big pullers (for being Chi's)
Would you recommend roman or step in harness?
I feel like a roman is more secure. But I'm not too sure.
For my tiny girl (4 pounds soaking wet) I use a ferret harness. It fits her just fine. It is a mesh. I also have several step in harness's for them. The harness does not go across the neck, rather it goes up between the legs, and over the back.
Okay so it does make sense that's it's better for dogs with sensitive necks.
My thing now is that my dogs are a bit sensitive but at the same time they are pullers. And I feel like a roman harness is more secure.
I just don't know if I should go with what I feel is more comfortable knowing my type of dogs or just use a step in as it's safer for their necks.
My smallest one is 5 pounds and he does have a vest harness. But it's not mesh or the brand Puppia (spelling?)
I once bought a mesh harness for Sunshine and it was way to big (should have got XS) plus it seemed like it quickly gets too dirty (opinion) So I much rather just stick with a regular harness.
But the vest is perfect for my little guy and he definitely doesn't mind being in it.
I tend to prefer Roman style if I can find one to fit the dog well. You can adjust the shoulder straps so the O ring is at or below the breast bone. That really keeps all the pressure away from the neck. I use a step-in now only because I couldn't find a Roman that fit my skinny little guy. There are good options if the dog's chest is over 12" around. Mine is only about 11", so he is hard to fit.
Yes I also prefer the roman style honestly but I was wondering if one was "better"
I never realized that the roman can be too big for the smaller Chi's. But my dogs fit just fine in either.
I don't think we can say that one is better than the other in general. It depends on what the person wants and what fits the dog comfortably. If both fit a dog well without causing discomfort, it is up to the owner's preference.
