Default We're Adopting Gizmo!

So Gizmo is being neutered on the 29th, and he can go to a home three days after that. Bryan finally decided we could put in an application for him yesterday

So I have an area he can be crated/penned once he's here and we aren't home.

I'm going to go buy him a harness today or tomorrow, and a good coat because it's normal for it to be -30C here.

I'm wondering though, what's the best type of harness to buy, and do you guys keep them on all the time (like a collar on a larger dog?) Or do you just put it on every single time you need go take them out?

Also, toys! I think I'm going to have to look in the cat section for cat kongs and stuff like that, or maybe order online. He's only 3 so I think he'll appreciate having something to play with.

He met Jersey (our current dog) and they were really good together. He was really excited to smell her and inspect her. A little nervous when she looked at him head on and sniffed him (she's 98lbs) but zero aggression.

The only thing will be introducing him to the cats. He was a stray intake at the pound he came from, so they have no idea if he was ever exposed to cats or not. Any suggestions for the initial intro?

Thanks everyone! I'm super excited!!

That's fantastic, congrats! My life has been immeasurably improved since I added a Gizmo to it

My guys don't wear anything around the house. They're nekid at home. They get harnessed up when we go out. A lot of people around here are very fond of a harness called a Buddy Band...I've never tried that one out personally, but the type you should be looking for is one that they step into (much easier to get on/off than something you have to put over their heads all the time), and something that doesn't go around their neck at all.

You'll have to see how much and what type of a player he is, but cat toys don't work for my guys. Cat toys just aren't built to withstand rough play and chewing, and they total them in minutes. None of my three are really all that into balls, they all love stuffies though. And especially ones with squeakers, much to my dismay. My Gizmo's BFF is a stuffed lambchop that is actually about as big as he is, but he packs him around no problem, so you don't have to worry so much about them being itty-bitty toys (which is why I assume you're thinking cat toys). As for a Kong, again, my guys have regular (red) dog Kongs in the XS size and they have no problem with them at all. If your Gizmo needs something smaller, definitely give the cat Kong a go.

How great! Gizmo might like a small red Kong. They also have 'puppy' kongs for smaller dogs. As for the harness, I would get a 'step in' harness. PetCo/smart have them. I actually have a ferret harness for one of my dogs. My dogs are also 'naked' in the house too. I suppose that you could put on a harness in the am and take it off, when bedtime comes.?

Thanks! I'm going to take a look at what we have available at the pet valu here, and maybe order in a few things from Amazon if there isn't much available.

I'm so excited!

As for the cat: Most cats can handle a little dog. Does the cat have claws? If so, I would have the dog on leash, or in a pen when I introduce the cat. I would feed treats every time the dog saw the cat. Eventually the dog will figure out that the cat means a treat! When my chi's were puppies my siamese cat jumped into their pen and swatted them with her paw. No claws. They are very leary of her, and that's fine with her!

Yes they most definitely have their claws.

They've been around dogs their whole lives, but we've got no history for Gizmo with cats. We'll try introducing them with the cats in carriers, but they also have lots of places they can go to get away from him, so hopefully they manage to work things out alright

Hey, maybe he came from a home where he was best friends with a cat lol - I can dream!

I'm glad you'r BF finally said yes
As for harness I use both step in and regular. I just prefer the regular.

I got him a coat today I had to eyeball the size so I'm really glad it fit.

Our Pet Valu has really minimal stock, no step ins small enough for him.

We don't get him until early February, So might do a day trip next week to a bigger city a few hours away and go to Petsmart since they have more selection.

Might also get him some pjs or something a little warm to wear in the house - it's pretty chilly in our apartment sometimes.

No interest so far in the chews or toys I've brought him -.- hoping it might just be due to the stress of the kennel. We'll keep trying!

My current dog Jersey is more than happy to gobble up the rejected chews lol.

Also, considering renaming him! He was a stray intake from a pound, so he hasn't had the name long. Bryan likes Diogi (DeeOhGee) Dio or Deeg for short leaning towards that for the time being.

I'm so excited! Taking Jersey for another play date next week. Super bizarre seeing them together with the size difference.
... He has to stand on his hind legs to smell her bum *facepalm*
