Shadow loves getting his nails trimmed.
Hey guys, I know a lot of people's dogs hate having their nails trimmed and I thought I'd talk about the positive experience I've had with it.
I know how unpleasant it can to be have their paw held still while something makes a noise and takes a chunk of their nail off, so I wanted to put a big emphasis on giving him a positive association with it. I started out really slowly, I let him first sniff the trimmer until he was disinterested in it, I then put it on his paw and took it away. Next I picked up his paw and put it on it then took it away. After a bit I started taking a small piece off of his nail, so small there was no chance of quicking him at all, and after I did it I immediately started praising him. The goal is get him thinking "Hey, that wasn't so bad and he started praising me after, not a bad deal". I just kept doing one clip then praising him, and he was happy to do it. Now when I grab the nail clippers he comes to me and gives me his paw without me even having to grab it.
This is just what worked for me in case anyone was looking for a strategy to try. Shadow is in general a really mild dog, I can't really get him to be aggressive, so it might not work the same way on a different Chi, but worked wonders for me.
