Default Funny story: I guess I'm not immune to breed prejudice

It's been a long time since I went to church. I've been wanting to reconnect but I wasn't sure what to do about Laurel: she is still so little that I don't leave her home alone yet, even though she is old enough that I don't have to worry about hypoglycemia any more.

So I took her with me last Sunday.

The congregation is much smaller now and Pastor's wife and I raised our kids together so she told me nobody would mind. People used to bring their dogs to church in some of my old books about the early 20th century.

The sermon was wonderful, but of course my little dog didn't understand it and she wanted to get out of her doggy sling and go make friends with all the new people.

I did leave and it was embarassing but it was also so funny I just had to share it with chi people who would understand!

She wasn't barking or growling--that wouldn't have been embarassing at all, I just would have taken a growly barky dog out to the car where dogs belong.

She wasn't howling or baying--that wouldn't have been embarassing at all, I just would have taken a howling, baying, flea-scratching ol' houn' dawg on back to the woods where dogs belong.

What was awkward was that here I was, sitting in a pew at my church in front of a family I love (even though the late twentysomething daughter neither recognized nor remembered me) with a little dogbaby wearing a "sunday go to meeting" dog dress I found at the thrift store for $3 and she starts FIDGETTING just like all my other toddlers and, to be bluntly honest, i talk to my dog so much that she makes these little noises that almost sound human.

I almost went on autopilot taking my "fidgetty little toddler" to go potty without disturbing the congregation, but time marches on even when I don't go to church and they had to install a security system on the door so it beeped.

Of course there was no Doggie Sunday School class to take her to downstairs. By that time I had the giggles too bad to even try finishing up the service.

I guess I do need to get the Bordatella shot so Laurel can go to doggy daycare and I can go back to my church.

I really do have a new baby who is just as lovable and special and worthy as any of my other kids even though she is adopted and the world only sees a silly little old lady with a yappy nippy rhinestone-encrusted dog.

I can't completely protect Laurel from breed prejudice even though she doesn't understand it. When my local community radio station played a very obscure artist I hadn't heard in years, I started singing along and emoting in the car and Laurel barked for the sheer joy of being a dog .

I didn't shush her or try to stop her at all---why should I? If I can sing off key in the car, she should be allowed to bark. She's so good about not barking in the house.

She also loves kids.

I have brought my chi's to church in their carriers. NO ONE KNEW THEY WERE THERE! When I went with them into the coffee hour afterwards, then people figured out there was a dog in the 'purse'!! One of the big teenagers carried one all through the hour. "A real neat chick magnet"!!!!!!!!!! Ahhhh memories!

 I seriously started looking on eBay for a "dog purse" after reading your post, which is another thing I swore I'd never do.

My "attachment parented homeschooled" dog is a hopelessly oversized Chi at this point but still "premie sized" if not "micro-premie sized" and fits in an old infant pouch sling under a pullover. If I was fifteen years younger, I'd just look pregnant.

On the trail, when people see me at a distance and then look up as i come close, they frequently laugh when Laurel pokes her head out or say, "I thought that was a (real) baby!" to which I smile and reply, "She is! She's just a puppy. She is X weeks old and she will get bigger. She is a Chihuahua mix and she wants to make friends, she just doesn't always know how yet."

We have two dog slings because why not! They only have to be strong enough to hold a small dog, not a large toddler, so they don't cost much money to make and I don't mind waiting for the lowest priced one to come from China or Hong Kong. One of them is actually useful as a pattern, even though it holds her way too low as it is, and it showed me how to attach a safety tether to the old baby slings I made years ago and the new doggie slings I'll make in future years.

The other is ridiculous, even though it looked quite nice in the photo.

It cost me about as much as a ticket to a standup comedy show.

I use a ferret carrier (just looks a little like a purse) There are several sizes so Laurel should fit into one. Cheap. I got one at PetSmart, and another one someone else bought at another pet store chain. They have lasted 10+years.
