Question Bailey's Back From The Vet... Questions!

He is a whopping 1 pound 9 ounces! Up from 1 pound 2 ounces on November 6th. We thought for sure he would have been at least 2 pounds!!! lol

Everything seems very well, he is right on target according the the vet tech. He got his DHPP vaccs. He was not a happy little guy and ran straight to me when it was all over. He is playing like normal and being a royal poop at the moment.

I wanted to ask about the Bordella (sp?) since I plan to have him at the park and in puppy classes... the vet mentioned he will need it, but since its not on the "core list" that I was reading about, I was wondering if its ok for him?

Also, she mentioned he really should have the Leptospirosis (sp?) because its highly contagious and can spread to humans. We have a lot of dogs running around our house, not to mention raccoons, wolves, rabbits, squirrels and field mice and she said this disease is spread by them. We live right by the woods and next to a big field. I am thinking he may need this... but what are your thoughts and opinions? ... Thanks!!!

I was just researching Bordetella and I came across this:

"Bordetella infection can be picked up by rabbits, guinea pigs, pigs, cats (if they are very young and housed in groups), and other dogs. Bordetella is generally not considered contagious to humans though it is closely related to Bordetella pertussis, the agent of Whooping Cough. Immune-suppressed humans potentially could be infected."

This really sucks because my immune system is crappy due to cronic anemia. I get sick a lot! My husband also has Asthma, so I am wondering if this is something he should have not only for him... but for us as well? Can it hurt him if we decided to get it???

We also have a rabbit and cats... so if they can carry it, they can also contract it if he brings it home.

My dog got it as soon as I took her to puppy class and she missed 2 weeks of classes because of it. I now keep her vaced against it because we take her downtown walking where other dogs have been.

I don't know if is a problem for chis, but some dog breeds (notably German Shepards) and cats can have fatal reactions to being vaccinated. My old meezer developed a shot lump that never went away and was very very sick. So ask LOTS of questions and do your own research. Kali has already had all her pup shots, and will only be given those that are really needed from this point out. (IE rabies. Rabies comes and goes in this neck of the woods.)

Some infos: http://www.doglogic.com/vaccineinfo.htm (homeopathic site)
http://leerburg.com/pdf/vaccinosis.pdf (note on this guy, he trains/trained police dogs)

If you plan on taking Bailey to the dog parks, puppy classes etc you will be required to get Bordetella in order to participate. We have no issues getting Bordetella but we do not get Leptospirosis.

In North America there is a low occurrence of infection from this but in your area perhaps there has been some recent cases. Our vet advised us to leave them out as there hasn't been a case in over 10 years. We don't suggest dogs in our area get this either.

We only get the bare minimum required for what we do with our dogs. We do titre testing after that to avoid over vaccination.

Before getting the vaccine I would discuss it with the vet and see if it is something you need to be concerned about in your area - as different regions can have different needs.

Thanks for the info! I will discuss this with him, I didn't like the vet tech. She acted like I was bothering her because I had a small list of things to discuss, including vaccs and the concerns I had.

We had thought we were going to see the actual vet... we were displeased to find out different. Anyway, when we go in for his next round I will request to see him.

IF he happened to get lepto because I didn't get the vacc.... what would be done for him? I will look it up tomorrow, I need to get to bed soon.
