Unhappy How do you tell someone that their dog food is BAD for their dog?

A lady I work with that I really like and consider a friend feeds her dog Beneful. The dog has eight billion allergies, skin problems, and is overweight because he's freefed. But this lady LOVES her dog. And she is SO proud that she feeds him Beneful. She says her dog is her little angel that she is blessed to have him love.

I was wondering...is there a good way or an easy way to tell her that it's really a bad food? I am not saying she needs to feed a four or five or six star food...but for crying out loud...Beneful? with salt, sugar, crushed up indecipherable animal byproducts, and loads of DYE?

I just wish she could see that if she put him on something good for him, it might cut down in his allergies. We were over at her house around Christmas and Oakley tried to eat some of the food out of the dish and I scooped her up and told her no, lol, and this lady goes on to say "Oh, it's okay, it's really good for them! It's Beneful, it even implies beneficial and healthful in the name!"

Some dogs do well on anything. We've had that discussion here and I think that's a valid point, but her poor dog is miserably scratchy, unhealthy, and biting sores on itself its so itchy.

Normally, I don't care. I feed what I think is best for my dog and what works for them. But this is someone I care about who I think would be devastated if she knew what she was really feeding him...

Any suggestions?

i would just mention that a change in food might help his allergies and maybe even give her some names of some good brands

Hmm, that is a predicament!

Maybe you could find an article or two about dogs with allergies, since diet is such an integral part of helping your pet overcome them. Then, pass them along to her with some suggestions of foods that would be good for her pooch's allergies and make the whole thing really casual so she doesn't feel like you're attacking her choice for her dog.

I think she would really appreciate it, and anyone who loves their dogs will want only the best thing for them. Heck, I used to think Purina was the Bees knees until the person I got Elliot from gave me some information and suggestions on better alternatives.

I'm glad that you actually do care, and I think she will see that too.

I used to feed my girls Beneful and WOW, I never realized how horrible it was for them!

Honestly, I would just be straight up with her. "Can I talk to you about something? I don't want to offend you at all, but I have read many bad things about the food you're feeding your dog. I found a list of some other wonderful, well rated foods."

Something along those lines maybe?
