Tonight, I decided to watch a movie. About 5 minutes before, I took Cooper outside to do his business and he peed and pooped - so the tanks were on empty. We came back inside, I made some popcorn for me and filled his kong with goodies to eat during the movie. By the way, what I'm about to describe happens every time we watch a movie ... this is NOT an isolated event.

We turned it on (we watched "The Wedding Date" with Debra Messing - not so good) and after about 20 minutes, he jumped off the couch and just stared at me. I ignored him so he went to the back door and barked to go outside. I paused the movie, got up, let him out and he sniffed all over the yard while I was saying "Cooper, dammit, hurry up!"

He came back in after NOT doing anything outside other than sniffing and we got back on the couch... 10 minutes later, he jumped down AGAIN and insisted I lay on the floor with him. So I paused the movie, moved to the floor, got a pillow for my head and my knee, grabbed the blanket and started the movie back up.

So then he decided he wanted to be back on the couch 20 minutes later and started throwing a fit for me to get back on the couch. It was then that I exercised my rights as The Mommy and I put the little stinker in his kennel, closed the door and locked him inside. He whined for the rest of the movie (he never whines in there - even when he's in time out) and, when it was over, I let him out and he got back on the couch and went to sleep.

WHY won't he let me watch a movie??! He will sit still while we watch TV - what's the difference? He does that during every single movie we put in and it's driving me NUTS.

Hi there,

Maybe it has something to do with the way you act when you watch a movie (no offence intended). Maybe he senses that your behaviour towards him changes when you are watching a movie and he challenges that by trying to distract you.

Maybe you should put your foot down earlier and avoid pandering to him when he is trying to assert himself over you....I know he is a cutie and this will be hard but maybe you just need to set down new ground rules.

Good luck!

When you're watching a TV program do you maybe move around more? e.g. go to the loo, or go get a drink during the commercials or stop to interact with Cooper? Whereas you would sit glued to the TV screen for longer if you're watching a movie on DVD or video and Cooper isn't getting any attention from his Mom? So it could be an attention seeking thingy???

Well... it can't be the DVD/VCR because we were watching a movie on TV, so that can't be it...

No one else was here and there really isn't any difference between how we watched the movie vs. TV, so that's not it....

The movie WAS bad but he does it during good movies as well....

I've concluded that he's a spoiled brat and just knows when it's a movie or something I don't want to get interrupted. Or maybe he just wants me to switch it to Puppy Bowl.

Maybe he doesnt agree with your movie choices and he thinks its time for him to get to choose the movie, LOL!

That makes sense. Maybe when sees you put in a tape/DVD he knows that mom's attention is going to be focused elsewhere for a long time and he has to do what he can to prevent it.

I don't have a clue what's going on there. Both the babies here want to watch with me. In fact, that's about the only time they can lay on me without me getting up 20 times to do something in the kitchen or get a kid out of something lol. They enjoy it. Maybe Cooper is just annoyed that all of your focus is not on him right then.

Regardless, Coop has a great personality! Just the few things I've read about him....he's a huge reminder of Marley. Marley, of course, is 1/2 Chi, but MAN the personality likeness is there!!! And he even has Coops facial shape. :)

*Tito is behind me chewing on his toes. WIERDO! :) *

No commercial breaks?

How about getting Cooper a doggie movie and putting it on while you go out so he can watch it in peace.. maybe he'll develop a liking for the dvd... OH.. I bet knowing Cooper, he'd insist on watching HIS movies every time.
We bought Animal Planet's Puppy Bowl (the thing they showed during the Super Bowl this year) and I leave it on for him every time I go out without him. He will sit and watch it for HOURS.

He just doesn't like it when *I* watch movies. Maybe next time he's watching Puppy Bowl, I'll go stand in front of him and do the same things he does to me. Eye for an eye and whatnot.

Probably for the same reason my mom's poodle won't let her read the paper or watch a movie or get on the computer....he wants ALL her attention. I've noticed Lillie does this to me at night when we go to bed and watch a bit of TV before drifting off. She'll get right in my view and sit there...staring at me till i either move her or say "what's ur malfunction?" then she thinks it's play time and want to play. EVERY DAMN NIGHT

Lily is actually better about letting me watch TV than movies too, though the difference isn't quite as extreme as it is with Cooper. One thing she won't let me do is read. I can knit til the bovines come home but let me pick up a book and she has 100 different ways to distract me. It's a shame because I adore reading but I haven't read anything for months. :(

These guys are just little weirdos.
