I agree with the article. In fact, I am a non-vaxer - period. I don't vaccinate my dog or my kids or myself. Just - NO!

Anyway, the whole Lepto thing has been a big deal to me since I read, years ago, that it was a bacteria and not a virus - much like the article reads. And, if anyone knows anything about vaccines they do not work on bacteria.

A little off topic but.....they are also working on a vaccine for Lyme Disease for both dogs and humans. And, like Lepto, Lyme Disease is also caused by a spirochete bacteria. Therefore, that "vaccine" will also be ineffective and a health risk to both dogs and humans.

There has been a vaccine for Lyme Disease for many moons already for dogs. It's one of the vaccines that I've always been on the fence about because I have Chronic Lyme Disease. I was diagnosed in 2003 and at that time MRI scans showed lesions on my brain that time lined it back about 12-15 years that it was in my system, without showing outward symptoms, which would mean that I had contracted it at about 7 years of age and no one knew. I was treated, then tested and I would test Negative only to have a "flair up" of symptoms that would send me back to the Dr. where I'd be tested again and found to be positive again, with no new tick bites (I was actually suffering from fairly bad agoraphobia at the time so I wasn't even leaving the house at all other than to go to the Dr.). This cycle repeated about 5-6 times, where we used progressively stronger and more combinations of antibiotics to kick it. I finally ended up on IV drugs. But the damage is done and I have still suffered long term migraines, joint pains, and many other issues. If I can go 5 years without a positive test, my Lyme specialist will consider me cured, but I'm stuck with the aftermath most likely forever.
My intimate experience with the disease made me trigger happy initially to get my dogs routinely vaccinated for Lyme Disease, even though I knew it was a bacteria based disease and not a viral. At the time, I also lived in RI, where I grew up and we had a LOT of ticks. I'm now in OH and it's not as bad out here and I've relaxed and gone "back to the drawing board" on my opinion of the vaccine.

I do delayed vaccines on my kids, and I cherry pick what they get. For a long time I didn't vaccinate at all, but over time, as they got older and didn't catch things like Chicken pox, etc. on their own, I decided I might as well vaccinate for that as the older you are when you get, often the worse it is. My husband didn't catch it until he was 16 and he was hospitalized it was so bad, so once my kids became teens I decided we might as well. I also have done the whooping cough vaccine for my kids as I have a son with severe asthma and he ends up in the hospital just with a cold, everything turns into pneumonia so I didn't want to worry about THAT one. But I definitely do my research!

Dorthy's Mom, have you found it difficult to find a vet that agrees with non-vaxing? What do y'all do about rabies shots? I know finding a pediatrician is hard enough, let alone a vet!

Anyway, didn't mean to veer off the Lepto topic so much but LD is a passionate topic for me! Thanks for the link!!

I was actually bitten by a tick just this July. And, after about ten days I developed the bull's eye pattern rash. The rash is now, just about gone. I did a test with inflammatory markers at about 3.5 weeks post-bite but it came back negative. But, as you know, a lot of the time the inflammation is delayed. So, anyway, I am hoping I DON'T have Lyme Disease. But the distinctive rash isn't making me feel so positive about the whole thing. I guess time with tell. ugh.

As for the vet.......my vet is pretty good about it. They never give me guff. BUT, then again, I am a very good client (not saying others who vax aren't!) who never balks at paying for a visit if needed. Heck, I spent $200 a month on my Bella when she was alive (she was diabetic) AND, another nearly $2000 in one shot when she got pancreatitis and the vet told me the chances of her pulling through were slim. So, point is, they are better off being friendly to me and not make vax money and I will keep coming and spending much more money than that, anyway! Also, it helps that I am very knowledgeable on vaxes and, well, anything that has to do with my pets. I am often going into the office and saying, "so I was reading this research article on XYZ, what do you think of that, because I also read this...".....and we have a lengthy discussion about it.

Oh, and it also helps that my hubby has the two letters "Dr" in front of his name. It tends to lessen medical professionals arguing with you because they think you are uneducated about things. And it's a shame because a lot of people are VERY educated about such things that don't have a "Dr" in front of their names.
