Default Zarita

Hi folks. I took Zarita into the vet for a check on her heart. Bad news. She has now developed some swelling in her abdomen (ascites-medical term) and the heart now is beating somewhat irregularly also. she has some muscle waisting in her upper front part of her chest. Vet would NOT x-ray, nor draw blood, nor give a rabies vaccination. "Too strenuous for her"!!! I think the vet is a little pesamistic, but who can tell. Meantime, Zarita continues to eat, poop, pee, bark at the squirrels etc. She does show some signs of difficulty breathing after she eats. When she lies down, you can see sort of a 2 'layer' breathing pattern. First the chest rises, then the abdomen.

The vet gave me the choice of increasing the lasix to a full pill a day, instead of the 1/2 tablet she gets now. I decided not to increase it for now. Her weight went up from 6.3 to 6.8 pounds in 5/6 months. Any ideas for anything else that might help? She takes lasix, vetmidin, and one other heart medication I can't think of right now.

Oh Susan. I'm sorry to hear this but am glad that Zarita is feeling well within herself, that is what's most important. Sadly for us, our Vet was quite accurate about my Flute's (my Chi x) eventual outcome. She was on similar meds to Zarita and started to slowly work harder to breathe. We decided to say goodbye without invasive treatments such as draining the fluid from her lungs etc. Our Vet predicted 2 weeks and that was what we got almost to the day. I hope that Zarita continues to feel well. Please know that I'm thinking of you and understand how difficult and yet precious this time is. Much love. 💕

Thanks Karen for the good thoughts. I have decided to give her two meals (breakfast and lunch with each being half of what she gets in total. Better for her heart, not to have to work so hard digesting food.. It is a sunny day here in Illinois, and she is 'baking' in the sun! The acites is fluid in the abdomen, not the lungs. If that happens, yes I will euthanize her, like you did with Flute. I want her to be as comfy as possible during what ever time she has left.

I'm wondering has anyone on the forum ever had a home euthanization? I am strongly considering it.

It was difficult to find a provider of home euthanasia here it CT. I ended up having a bad experience at the vet, though I have been through a number of deaths, and they all went more smoothly. I did take Dmitri's body to the crematory myself and witnessed his cremation. It all depends on what is available in your area.

Reta, I have a vet who I actually know that does house calls. He was a vet that practised with the vet facility that I go to. He went into private practice. He met us at a vet about 15 miles away one night with one of the dogs (sheltie) that got into turkey fat and got pancreatitis. She recovered at home with nothing in her tummy except water for 24 hours. We were lucky.

I am glad you have access to someone you trust. I would totally do it at home if I could next time. Sending love!
