Thanks Susan...the specialist always sends a detailed discharge report to our vet and to us...Izzys problem is that with the Sick Sinus Syndrome she arrests with any amount of anesthesia as her heart rate is very slow and erratic , she has frequent periods when her heart does not beat at all...the pacemaker is needed to give her heart the shock needed to resume a rhythm ...after that she will be able to have anesthesia without difficulty other than some extra monitoring....I always have my hand on her chest now when she lays beside me and it frightening to feel the long pauses between beats...some dogs manage very well with bradycardia...Izzy does pretty good, no syncope just fatigue..the cardiologist feels that when Izzy sits down when out in the yard or on walks etc, that she is feeling very weak and that the rest period prevents the syncope..but that might change at any time ..

I knew she had SSS, but didn't realize her heart block was so severe that ANY anesthesia affected her. My prayers are with you and of course her.

She has a second degree block..at this point the escape rhythm ( delayed ) is supporting her..but the fear is that she would need emergency surgery and not have anesthesiology support available..she would require transcutaneous pacing and the likelihood of that being available are problematic...so better to go with the internal pacer and eliminate this scenario...her resting rate is 20 - 30 BPM with abrupt pauses of 7 plus seconds..

Good luck with the surgery! We'll be crossing fingers, toes, arms, legs, paws, eyes and every other crossable bodypart! I'm sure she'll do great, lil' trooper that she is.

Haha, Shizzy once had a camo harness, and everyone assumed she was a boy whenever she wore it. I thought camo was gender neutral, but I guess not, so I've learned to only buy purple stuff (it suits her better than pink) for her, and pink for Molly (that suits HER better). Funny how people assume genders based on what a dog is wearing - just like babies. :P

I am always surprised at some people...I have had the girls wearing their diamond collars with diamond studded hearts hanging from them ( might not be real diamonds ) and someone will say...what's that little fellows name ? OMG... little fellow..they are dripping in diamonds and wearing feminine sweaters !!!! LOL
