Question new bag for dexter, but he wont get in :(

i would have better pictures...but my bf has my digi cam so here is an okay pic of the bag and dexter sniffing the biscuit i left on top of the bag...

i've tried the other kind with the airline regulated ones but he HATED it...and so here i am went to the city for just him...and he doesn't even like this tote bag...which wasn't cheap. please does anyone have some advice on how to get him to like going in it?

i also got him a new treat called "good dog" it's the chicken pot pie flavor.

i got both of these from this cute dog place called "Happy Paws" in NYC. they have lots of cool clothes, toys, even orijen and wellness food which i was surprised, quality treats (holistic), frozen beef...which i never knew existed for dogs, a dog daycare, training, even puppia harnesses cheaper than online, bullysticks, those nylabone chews (corn one i got for dexter again) and much more~! some of their stuff were even cheaper than Petsmart which really threw me off( the only thing that is a bit expensive would be the clothing/booties), oh and as a plus they have plenty of cat things as well they have valentines sale that's 20% off right now too, god i wish i lived closer to this place...hehe
this is their site but...being there is more amazing then looking at this
http://www.happypawsinc.com/index.asp
i also saw so many puppies in the daycare center! too cute

I am no expert but maybe if you sat on the couch with the bag beside you and coaxed Dexter into the bag by putting some treats or his favourite toy. Then just talk to him and pat him while he is in the bag. He might eventually get used to the idea the bag is a nice place to be.

Maybe let the bag air out for a few days, you know unzipped and out in the open. sometimes fabrics are treated with preservatives (yes, i'm serious!) and they need some time to evaporate. Maybe this is the case and dexter smells something that he doesnt want surrounding him... If it was mine, I would try cutting up an apple and setting it on a paper plate inside the bag overnight. I know this sounds crazy, but my uncle used to haul travel trailers and he said the preservative fumes would be very strong in them and an apple would somehow absorb them overnight. btw, i wouldnt eat the apple afterward.
when I worked in a fabric store the new bolts of fabric always smelled VERY strongly of chemicals. Anyway, its just a thought.

what about putting something of yours in the bag? your nightshirt or something to change the smell of the inside to something familiar

I would just leave it open for him to explore and get used to. Of course put a treat or two and maybe a favorite toy in it as well But maybe if he doesn't feel pressured into it he's just love it on his own.
Just something to try. Venus is to stubborn to stay in a bag at all, she gets too excited and wants to explore instead of sit in a tote lol.

rhaubejoi's advice sounded interesting... I also think you should air out the bag and then maybe leave some treats or a bone or something like that in there and leave it open and let him come around to it on his own. It may just be that it's unfamiliar so he's being cautious.

Also, I looked at the site you posted... I wish we had more daycare choices around here!! We have a few... but... yeah...we need some more. lol Anyway, if you'd like another boutique to check out, you should try http://www.gingerpuplane.com There's a lot of really unique and fun things there.

just put him in and carry him out the door ....it's cold out so he sure will stay inside the bag...put his blanket or something in the bag too.......

If he doesn't want to go in I wouldn't make him. It isn't natural for a dog to be confined to a bag like this. Why does he need to go in?

I've had three Chihuahuas now and none went into bags, they walked or were picked up and carried in our arms if necessary
