Smile ~Dirty City Walk...Makes Me Happy~

As you guys know, we've made some huge improvements with Bella, both
physically & mentally. But there are still tiny issues that we are working on.
One of those issues was recently solved. Bella didn't give me a very hard
time adjusting to a harness, but I also wanted her to learn to tolerate a
collar, and that she truly did not want. It took us a very long time, but we
are finally 100% successful. We mostly walk with a harness, but for the
desensitizing I have taken her out several times with a collar, and she has
finally mastered wearing one. It no longer poses an issue, she is not at
all bothered by it, and walks perfectly with one on, never pulls, never lags
behind, always by my side with a loose leash. This is a very small
achievement, but we celebrate every step forward towards being fear free.
A collar used to terrify her, so this really warms my heart. Here are some
random shots from a walk. Hope you enjoy my pups! (Chanel stayed at home
because she was wet from her bath, but do not worry I will make up for it
with a thread just for my fluffy monkey!)

Look at me walking mom!(I tried to run in front of her to take a picture, lol)

I walk like a pro, even through ice & snow...even with a collar on!

Mama looks like a giant!!!

Bella gets the special treatment during "group shot"...wrapped in mama's arm.

Ma, you are proud of me right? Tell me I'm a good girl again!(look at those dirty city paws)

Papa & the boys are on top of the world!

Hmm mom, those tiny rocks don't feel very nice on my bottom!

Papa don't help me! I'm a big girl! I can get down on my own!

Mama's beautiful boys.

Ma, why do we always have to pose on logs? lol

Click to watch two tiny videos of my baby girl walking like a good girl!

Wish you knew how happy this makes me.

Hope everyone has a good night!

Thank you Cindy.
She is tiny yes, but we don't let that stand in her way of being a dog, she walks
4 times per day like a big girl, she loves the outdoors. She gets to take little
breaks when needed and even some refreshments, lol. She is a very smart girl,
she was just holding back a lot due to fear, but she's come a long way and I
can't be more proud, she's an angel, a real blessing to our family.

Your babies are gorgeous!!! I Need some tips on getting my two boys used to a collar and harness. I have tried putting their collars on and leaving them on in the house, but they wont move a muscle with them on. They will stay in the same position for hours. Any tips you have that might help me would be much appreciated.

You are very kind, thank you.

My techniques are very simple...1.associate the collar with something positive(such as treat, praise, walk, cuddles) and 2. use distractions while dog wears the collar(such as play, basic obedience practice, or even silly happy sounds). At first I simply gave Bella time to get used to being around a collar, let her smell it, put a treat near it, jingle it, open/close it next to her...we did this once in a while for a couple of weeks, exposure was always very short. Basically just slowly but surely lessened her sensitivity to it, by it being present around things she loves, without her having to wear it. You will not achieve great results if you force something like this too quickly, especially with a sensitive dog. Eventually once she was comfortable being around the collar itself, we started putting it on. At first just for brief periods, always hand in hand with something pleasant, be it a raw bone, a massage, a game, etc. Then I started walking her on her harness(which by then she was comfortable with) but wearing her collar at the same time. We would keep up the pace, use singing, high pitched praise, treats, anything to keep her walking without focusing on what she is wearing, keeping her alert and stimulated at all times. Then eventually I would transfer the leash from the harness to the collar, and finally we just removed the harness all together. This took months, normally with a mentally stable dog it should not be so difficult, but Bella was extremely sensitive, anxious and fearful of a million and two things. Just keep in mind to provide something positive for your dogs every time they wear their collars, distract your dogs, play, train, walk, feed, anything nice, do not just let your dogs roll around on the floor in panic trying to chew it off(for example). If they don't want to move then back up, remove the collar, you could be moving too fast, work on them accepting the collar as is first, then try a while later to put it on, always briefly. And never leave it on all day, keep your training sessions short and sweet. This is all just my personal experience of course, I'm simply sharing what worked for us. Hope it helps you in some way. I always have a hard time explaining things, I'm a visual person, I much rather show you than tell you.

Really? That yucky dirty snow?
We've had warmer than average temperatures lately and a lot of rain,
so most of our beautiful white snow melted or got mixed in with dirt from
the streets. Thank you for your sweet words my love!!! Kisses to Jaxx!
