Default how to know if puppy has ear infection...

Hi there! I was just wondering about ear infections because my puppy has been scratching the heck out of his one ear in particular. I was examining it last night and I notice that one part was a hot pink color because she had scratched that part with her nails. So, my question is...if a dog has itchy ears, does that always signal an infection? I've already spent way over $300 in vet bills within the last 2 weeks, so I really don't want to spend more money on another visit if it's unnecessary. I don't mean to sound stingy...I love my puppy more than anything and I wouldn't do anything to jepoardize her health. Any feedback would be helpful. I tried cleaning out her ear with the wipes, but she went nuts on me when I tried this. It smells really good though. =)

I'm not sure if this is true 100% of the time, but I've heard that the ears will smell bad if there's an infection.

I'm sure you looked in there... did you see any dirt or did any gunk come out when you cleaned it? OmaKitty gets this stuff that looks like black grainy goo in her ears when her infections get really bad... she's got chronic infections, the poor thing.

I'd be looking for dirt, smell or fleas!

Thanks so much for the quick reply Cooper's mom. Actually, there's no odor, dirt, or anything in her ears. Her ears are very clean. It's just that she keeps on scratching it so much that it looks really irritated. I was just wondering if she was scratching it like crazy because she had an infection. When I used the wipes yesterday, nothing rubbed off on it. I guess she's okay, but I'm just so worried about her all the time. I just got scared because it was a bright pink color, compared to her other ear which is a pale pale pink color. I guess I'm just over reacting. Goodness...puppies are alot of work. =)

I tried smelling my puppy's ears, and there seems to be a minor stench coming from her left ear. I'm not sure if it's that she needs to have it cleaned out, or if it's an actual ear infection because she doesn't have any black grime or anything else coming out. Her ear looks perfectly clean, but it's just a little stinky. Anyone have any idea as to what could be causing this odor? I gave her a bath last night, and it seems to have gotten better, but it is still there. It's a very slight odor, but it's still detectable. I would appreciate any feedback! Thank you!! =)
