Default Socialization Problems: Please Help!

I've tried everything. Really. Josie just isn't a people-Chi. She growls and barks at everyone who stops to talk to us if she doesn't know them. If they move in closer or try to pet her, she'll snap and sometimes even try to bite them. I've tried spanking her when she does it when I'm holding her, but it doesn't have any affect on her whatsoever. I've put her on the ground, but she still barks and growls.

Anytime we have company, she runs around the person and barks and growls and it's embarrasing. She's so cute and tiny and obviously, people want to play with her. It's just humiliating on my end and it kills me because every time the person is just like, "Oh, I should have known better. Chihuahuas are a mean breed of dog," or "That's just like a Chihuahua." I don't want Josie to be the stereotypical dog that people see her as. What can I do to help her?

yeah good question. Blue was fine until this summer. All last year I had no problems with him, he barely ever barked unless I barked at him! Now he barks at every man, including my husband whom Blue loves. My neighbor has given him meat off his sandwich and finally made friends with Blue, but for the last 6 month Blue would bark his fool head off at him. I wind up screaming my head off at Blue to get him to stop, but I just read in Chi's for dummies not to do that. grrrr I dunno what the answer is. I know chi's are nervous breeds, however, I feel I did a really good job socializing the heck out of this little guy. Blue has no issues when we go to chi meetups. He never growls or barks at anyone there, I can't figure that out!

I have the same problem with Bac. She is especially wary of little kids. I also tried to socialize her when she was younger, but I think it only helped a little. I have one nephew that she just can’t tolerate and when he visits, Bac is non-stop barking and if my nephew tries to pet her, she WILL snap at him. It drives me nuts. However, I have noticed that my nephew acts “funny” around Bac and she senses that. On my nephew’s last visit I told him to not look at Bac and to ignore her and act as normal as possible. It seemed to work well. Also I noticed that if I hold Bac she is content and you would hardly know she is around – she is very quiet, she’ll let you pet her and she gives “kisses”. But the minute I put her down – she is a different creature! I’m not sure what to think of that. You’re not alone

My little Josie is a terror?? Say it isn't so!!!

I wonder if she doesn't see you and other humans as being dominant over her. Since she's doing it on the ground as well, it might be that she feels insecure and unsure about what she should do when afraid or anxious, so she does what she knows best - bark and growl.

Does she eventually calm down and stop barking at people she meets? If so, you might try giving the person she's being mean to some treats to hang on to when they're in your house. The person could randomly drop treats by their feet or in their general area if she's being nice while teaching her that people are okay.

I just don't know... do you have plans on taking her to puppy or obedience classes? That might help you in gaining dominance and building up her confidence.

Sheryl, she really isn't a terror at all! She's perfectly sweet around Brandon and I and most of my family. Sometimes, after company has been here a while, she'll stop barking as much, but she still runs around and wants right up in my lap. One of Brandon's friends came over last weekend and she did her normal bark, growl, snap routine. He's a huge dog lover and has four of his own, so he was so upset that she didn't want anything to do with him. He kept putting his hand down and letting her sniff, which she would do, but didn't care. So, he gave all his luvins to Ryan. When Josie saw that, she actually went over to him and jumped in his lap. He wasn't allowed to pet her, mind you, but she did that much. I'd love to get her in a class, but there's nothing right now that I can do. I'm hoping this one I found will start back up again after the new year.

I wish I could give you some advice...sounds just like Diego, except he's much better when I put him on the ground. I share in your humiliation though....Diego actually lunged at a lady at starbucks when I was holding him the other day. Give him 20 minutes and he'll love anyone, but strangers just freak him out. The fur on his back stands up, so I know he's scared therefore punishing him doesn't seem right. Of course I know how sweet he really is but when they act like that of course you always get the little dog comments and it irks me like crazy! I'll let you know if I ever find something that works!!

Hi,My greatgrandmother had 5 of them and I remember when I was small they would nip at my ankles.Hated that. But there was always something about this lttle breed that tugged at my heart. I now have my first and only Chi,a lttle girl all 4.6 pounds of her. She is 8 months old now,I got her at 8 weeks old.The breeder that I got her from told me not to rough house with her, that is what can make them mean. Well, Im not sure about that, but I have 4 children ages 11,12,13,15. My lttle Ruby as we call her,is so loving. She has never went after anyone.I think this is due to the fact that our 4 children baby her so much, as well as I do and it helped that she has been around so many of there friends also, that she just does not seem to do everything that I heard about this breed. In fact when I picked her up from the vet,she was spayed on Monday, they said thay hated to see her leave. She was so loving and they said that the other one's they get have been nippy. So I no what you mean about the remarks that some people make about them and them being nippy. Ruby is young yet, and only time will tell if she will change.I hope not, but got to love them Chi's.
Sheryl
