Default Traveling with Chihuahua

Road tripping this weekend to do a color tour and thinking about taking our Molly with us.. I have googled and received many good tips about traveling.

I see people around town who bring their dogs into a store and I think to myself hmm how do they know that they can bring their dog in here? Is there some way to distinguish dog friendly places? Any other tips you care to give about road tripping with a Chihuahua- please share. Thanks!

Most stores do not allow dogs. If they ask you to leave then do it- and no where will allow them if they have food.

Good luck.

I think its a great idea to take molly with you, I think you would both enjoy it!
also as for stores, I take millie with me a lot and ive never been told im not allowed to do so. I don't take her into places that serve food though as I don't think its allowed.
she is always in her carrier though and so shes barely even noticeable

I would invest in a nice carrier that looks like a womens pocketbook/ purse . the kind that zips up at the top and has nice venting . then if Molly is quiet, you can bring her in and hopefully no one will notice.
I see you live in Michigan. if you live near Chicago at all... they have some nice dog boutiques there you could get one for this weekend. there is Tails in the City, and there are a few others too ...

yes, places with food don't allow dogs. its a board of health rule.

I take Lola lots of places and she is either not noticed or people don't care, of course Colorado is a pretty dog friendly state. You see even big dogs being walked on leash in Walmarts and Targets. They do sell food there obviously. I do try not to bring her anywhere food is served or sold if I can help it. I have snuck her into a waffle house in her bag once because we were moving here from Florida and I was not abandoning her in the car. I agree with some of what others said about getting a nice bag to smuggle her in when necessary. Honesty is always the best policy with regard to hotels though so book ahead. I say go for it and have a good time!

I have traveled from Joliet IL to N.H. many times. Three days. Dogs did great. We walked them when we stopped, about every 2-3 hours. When we ate, we either ate in the car, or parked the car and left the air on. (I ate very quickly, and didn't like doing that. We had a card in the window, explaining the motor was on because of the air conditioning.) I don't know whether I'd do that again. At the motel, I always told them I had a dog. Period. I didn't tell them there were 3 chihuahuas! Some wanted $25.00 PER dog. I just couldn't pay that plus the regular fee for me! Worked out fine. I walked one dog at a time. They all had their own carriers (actually ferret carriers) that they slept in. When I went to Camp Gone to the Dogs in Stowe VT, I also brought an Iris pen along. We stayed there for up to 2 weeks, so the pen came in handy.

Well we didn't bring her yesterday. My 14 year old son and 19 year old daughter decided they didn't want to go so we left the dogs in their care. I missed her and turned out the couple stores we did go in were pet friendly and they advertised it on the door even! I was quite surprised. Tourist traps so I guess they want you to come in even with the dog if need be. LOL

Next time we will take her for sure if we go back to same area. bought the chihuahua thing on our trip!

I am planning on taking Autumn with me when my family goes down to Gatlinburg this year for a week during Thanksgiving. We get our own cabin and do a lot of thing outdoorsy but also will be taking her cage incase we do go somewhere that prohibits dogs.

I just can't seem to leave her with someone while we go out of town, she is still so small and fragile and I just wouldn't trust anyone to watch her.
