Default Questions regarding de-worming.

So my 2 month old puppy was dewormed by the shelter one week ago. They used "Strongid for roundworms".

Since then she is still has worms in her poo sometimes. But I don't think they are roundworms, they definitely look like tapeworms.

I read that Strongid do not kill tapeworms. Would it be okay for me to go to my pet store and buy a tapeworm medicine and give it to her tomorrow?

I would bring in a stool sample to the vet. Could be that she has more than one kind of worm. Round worms are common in puppies. Tape worms can be bad for a tiny puppy. This is one time the price of a vet pays off, in my humble opinion.

I'm suprised they didn't worm the puppy for all worms if she's never been wormed or at least check her for the worms. I definitely would get the meds from vet cause the medicine you get from petstore can be dangerous and sometimes doesn't work.

Strongid does not work for tapeworm. Kills all other worms except that. Also, as with all other worm meds, it has to be done again in 7-10 days. I do all shots and wormings myself. I buy the same meds the vet uses either at the local feed store or online. I have bred and cared for dogs for over 40 years so I'm comfortable with it. If you have even the smallest doubt that you know what you're doing go to the vet. Even now I still go to my vet when I have to.

It's not unusual for a dog to appear clear of tapeworms for a while then suddenly you see them again. You don't see them until the segments detach from the end. I doubt if it's gone and important to get rid of it as soon as you can.

Just a update, today we took her to vet, she was given DRONTAL. About 2 hours later **** went poop and saw probably 15mL of tapeworms. It was disgusting. But I am glad she is now free of worms!

Honestly I have no idea why shelter only gives dogs/puppies strongid at initial adoption when it only kills roundworms. They should give something that kills a vary of worms like DRONTAL.
