Default Weird Chi Question......

I see a number of Chis online that have their tongues hanging out of the side of their mouths. Now, when I am seeing these dogs they seem to have a neurological condition or something that causes their tongue to be hanging out beyond their control.

I see this FAR more often in Chis than I have in other breeds (or, the argument could be made that I look at or are more aware of Chis since I have one.).

Is this something Chis are more prone to? If so, what is the condition they suffer from that causes this?

Off to the side might mean that they are missing teeth or the teeth setting is off. If their tongue is in the front, it usually means that their tongue is to long for their mouth, usually a chihuahua with a extremely short muzzle. I've meet many dogs with tongues hanging out, including chi's and there's usually something wrong with their bite.

This is exactly what my little Bonnie does. She has such a short "show dog" muzzle that her tongue regularly hangs out a little bit. She can keep it in her mouth, but very often it is sticking out. I HATE some 'show' breeders!!! They don't stop to think what is happening TO the dog, just go ahead willy-nilly breeding these short muzzled chi's. Bonnie snorts and wheezes, mostly while she is eating. Several times I have rushed her to the vet for breathing problems, after eating. Diagnosis was panic attacks, due to a short palate etc. Now I pick her up and talk with her while rubbing her back. After a few minutes she calms herself. I have also used Rescue Remedy on her.

I forgot to mention that Bonnie's 'fangs' are missing on the bottom. One is lying sideways, and the other one is not visible.

Our 'guest' chi has missing teeth on one side and often his tongue hangs out. I would imagine it's because chis often loose teeth.

Yep, nine times out of ten it is a dental issue. Missing teeth cause protruding tongues, and very short muzzles cause all the teeth to be set wrong. Have you ever looked inside the mouth of a Pug or other flat nosed breed? It is quite shocking. They have no length to the muzzle but the same amount of teeth as any breed, all crammed in.

Chihuahuas are infamous for having major dental issues. They have such little mouths and so many teeth crammed in there. So they lose teeth/have them pulled etc., and as a result, their tongues protrude because the teeth are what actually hold the tongue in the mouth.
