Default Allergies or something else...

Good afternoon all...

Have a few questions concerning my chi baby. About a month ago, in the middle of the night he had an "attack" and totally freaked me out. Apparently now after doing some research, it is reverse sneezing. I took him to the vet concerned about it, since I am new to all of this, and she didn't really have any answers, told me to give him benadryl and she prescribed antibiotics. He finished his 2 weeks of antibiotics (2 weeks ago) and is still having reverse sneezing attacks a couple times a day. He also has nasty snotty nose, and is sneezing quite often, with his sneezes his "discharge" is a creamy color. We took him to a different vet, and she listened to his lungs and they are all clear. She also told us to continue with the bendaryl, and gave him some cough syrup that she prescribed. Nothing is working to help dry up the snotty nose and sneezing. I have started giving him 5mg of Claritin in the mornings as well. Are allergies common in chihuahuas? We do live in Southern Arizona where it is dry and dusty, and everything is blooming right now. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions? I have taken him to the vet again with concerns, and they don't have any answers to help him, other than if they benadryl doesn't work I need to take him to a specialist and have him x-ray'd and scoped. Any help would be awesome...

A creamy colored nasal discharge could be an infection. Have any of the vets looked into his nose? Could be a grass seed etc up in there that is caught. Until you find out that his nasal passanges are open and clear, I'd not be giving him any claritin. They just mask the real cause. Good luck.

Thank you for your response Susan, no neither of the vets will scope his nose because he is so tiny. Guess I will have to take him to a specialist that's 3 hours away. In the meantime I may stop the claritin and benadryl and see what happens. I hate giving him pills anyway, because like you say I don't want to mask the problem.

The discharge isn't normal, but reverse sneezing is very common in small dogs. I've had four Chihuahuas and they have all done it...it's irregular and doesn't happen daily, but they all do it.

Yeah, reverse sneezing is just a thing with small dogs, and chis seem especially prone. I've spent a small fortune trying to clear up Tango's allergies because he sneezes and coughs and his eyes get gunky periodically and sometimes there's nasal discharge. My vet and I finally decided that unless I move to Alaska, it's just going to be that way. I deal with my own allergies too, so I understand that sometimes there's just not whole helluva lot one can do.

As far as your vet being concerned about scoping a dog so tiny, I'd suggest you change vets. I looked for a vet who is an exotics specialist, meaning that they're used to dealing with small animals. My guy is fabulous and I feel very confident with him. I mean, if he can spay or neuter a rat, then I'm not worried he's going to be struggling with Tango or Jazz's anatomy or the right anesthesia dosage if they have to go under!

Benedryl is safe. You should never be afraid to give Benedryl for anything. I definitely would seek out a different vet to check on the creamy discharge. Keep us updated.
