Default overheating

took my girl to the park yesterday for my sons soccer game afterwards they wanted to play at the park which I agreed to I brought her food and water since it was a little hot and also bc she's only around 7weeks and has to eat often. she was Ihaving a lot of fun but would start to cry for seemingly no reason when I was standing near my van and she was under it i gave her some water which she drank she didn't seem hungry at all she mainly wanted to sleep after running around but I decided it was too Much after a total of about an hour there it wasn't too hot upper 70s with a cool breeze but she's double coated and I was wondering ways we could prevent overheating and signs to look for she loves to play outside when the kids and I go out she always has fun chasing them but I want to be aware bc she does go everywhere with us I kniw not to leave her in the car she sleeps in my purse when we inside some where and she even likes to sleep in my purse at home too I'd just like to be prepared for anything.

Was she standing on concrete? Her little feet could have been burning and she was hiding under the van due to the shade keeping the concrete a little cooler. If you think your pup is getting that hot, you could have put water on her to cool her off. We usually take my chi boating with us, but if it's gonna be in the 90's, I will leave her home. Being your pup is only 7 weeks, she was probably really hot and tired as they tend to nap a lot at that age. Check her pads to see if they're blistered. It's always wise to consider not taking them outside when the temperature is too hot since they are wearing coats. Dogs can overheat very quick. If your pup starts acting different than usual and lethargic, you need to cool her down and watch her closely to know whether or not a vet visit is required.

I also wanted to mention that whenever I take my chi for walks, like when we're camping, I always walk bare-footed with her. If the concrete (sidewalk) is too hot for my feet, I know that it's definitely too hot for Midgies. I know that sounds weird, but I've always done that, not to mention I hate shoes. Lol

The smaller the dog, the faster they get too hot or cold. Even if it didn't seem hot to you, a little sun could get her too hot faster than you might expect. Give lots of chances to rest, drink, and eat.

I took mine to the park in April and we played fetch for ten minutes. It was only 18 degrees, overcast and there was some wind. He still got WAY too hot and had to sit in the shade for the rest of the trip and drink water.

I always bring a collapsible water dish with me and a water bottle. The more fur /darker colored/more active the dog is the hotter it is likely to get. I've also heard some chihuahuas love sun bathing so much they can get heat stroke if the owners aren't careful.

yea she certainly loves sunbathing and going outside. she cries at the door if it's been over two hours since we've gone out to play. we were on the grass and my daughter was barefoot too and I'm usually barefoot bcc I too hate shoes but that time I wasn't I had flip flops on. but I do love that idea thank you another reason to go barefoot I brought her water and food and she is darker colored and just to be safe on the way home I did drip some of her water down her which she wasn't happy about bc she was sleeping on my lap her favorite place.

You sound like me. I test the concrete barefoot LOL. Mine are mostly black so I am always keeping a close eye on overheating as they love to sunbathe. I keep icy treats on hand at home for a cool down.

we took her on her first walk with a leash yesterday and my husband have me a funny look when I took my shoes off instead of leaving them on and I told him its to test the blacktop and he was like good idea and I said thanks I got it from chi-ppl lol it worked great and she loved the walk. at first she wasn't liking the leash at all but after my husband passed her she was running to catch up to him I got a little jealous actually. I've always had make dogs that have been bonded to me like pongo was but she lights up when he gets home and her tail won't stop wagging so I'm starting to think that females do prefer males and males females but maybe I'm just paying it too much attention lol. but thank you guys for the ideas they've fed come in handy already.
