I am considering getting a Dremel (or similar non-branded power tool) as with 5 dogs that is 90 nails to clip every week and we go through nail clippers at an alarming rate. (Nothing worse than blunt clippers)
My question is which head is actually used for dogs nails? What else should I take into consideration when making my choice?

I bought a dremel 'kit' with a lot of extra stuff that I don't use. Everything in a bait bag type. (had a sale on them.) I use a sander bit and have only had to change it once in a great while.

Thanks Susan. Is yours corded or cordless?
I don't mind having the extra bits as I will use them for my arts and crafts projects, definitely want to get the right one for the dogs though.

Mine is a cordless one. It has a 'stand' that it sits in to keep it charged up. The minute I pick it up; the dogs disappear! Not that they are ever hurt, but dislike the noise I think. I get much better results than with a clipper. I have nicked the quick several times in my black nailed tricolor chi. Gosh!!! how it does bleed. Twice I had to take her to the vet to stop the bleeding.! Now I do the front nails and bring her to the groomer/vet for the nails on the back.

I got a "dremel" for xmas this past year, and have been using that most of the time. It's a corded, off brand one that was on sale at the local hardware store. All 4 dogs hate it, lol. It feels funny (I don't blame them, I can't stand having my toenails filed either!) But it's so much easier to get a good shape and keep the quick back!

I just use the basic tube sander bit. I'm on my second one since January, but the big dogs' nails wear it down quite a bit.

Speaking of... thanks for the reminder that I need to do their nails! Now where did they run off to??

I use a corded one and just use the basic sandpaper bit. It works well and doesn't bother Venus at all. Don't spend too long on each nail and allow the pups to get used to the noise before you initially file their nails down, as the noise can sometimes startle them at first.

I forgot to say, that you have to switch nails, so that the dremel doesn't get too hot on one nail. I dremel for about 3-4 seconds, then stop for the same amount of time, or go to another nail.

I have the Pedi Paws battery nail file. Midgie hates it as well, but I don't know why cause when I fight with her long enough as I'm filing, she usually falls asleep while I file. I don't have to change the sandpaper disc out but maybe every 6 months. Guess I need to file her nails today. Ugh.
