Default crazy Bonnie

Hello! My 5 year old female longcoat chi is a little bit crazy. Lousy breeding etc. She weighs 4 pounds. Here is the story, which some of you know about (sorry!), she refuses to eat out of a bowl, or plate SOMETIMES. Not all the time. Sometimes she eats fine out of the bowl, but at times she stretches her little body and eats out of the bowl, as if she is scared of it. This week has been bad. She will only eat if I put the kibble on the pee mat in her pen. Obviously, the pad is clean. I put down the dish and wait. I scatter some kibble on the pad which she eats. Then I wait. No eat. So I pour the kibble onto the mat and she will eat eagerly. Have any of you heard of this? Just wondering if I have the only 'nutty' dog!

Oh dear, I can't figure out what I did to make the type so small. Sorry.

Sorry, Susan, I haven't heard of this in particular, but I would think Bonnie has a very good reason for her behavior even if only Bonnie is the only one aware of it. Knowing Bonnie has had peculiarities since you got her, as long as you aren't worried about a physical concern and it doesn't cause you too much trouble, I would accommodate Bonnie and not worry about it too much.

Susan, a couple of things come to mind. Does she wear a collar, and could the tags be clinking against the bowl?

Have you tried different bowls and or plates? Metal, ceramic, plastic, taller, shorter, deeper, straight sides vs sloped etc? Also different colors?

I have a friend whose dog will only eat out of a wooden salad bowl. Go figure!

There's no telling what Bonnie's problem with bowls are, but I agree with Tina. Bonnie knows what the problem is! It's up to you to figure it out.

I have tried saucers, small bowls, and her porcelien (sp?) tiny bowl. I have given up, and just feed her on her washable mat. She eats quite eagerly there. How I wish that I could 'talk' with her for just 5 minutes!!!! Not in this world! This has come on this year, and the only difference is that my roommate died in June. Otherwise Bonnie is the same. Extremely shy and stays much of her time in the 'safety' of her pen. It is always open, and she comes out frequently for treats and to look out of the storm door which I open for some 'excitement'!!

Susan, I'm so sorry for the loss of your roommate. I don't know if that has anything to do with Bonnie's behavior, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Bonnie had a bad day yesterday, and I decided to take her to the vet for a check up. She was due for the annual blood tests etc. The vet called me this am, and every thing is fine with the blood. Evidently, she gets severe gut pain and has a icky stool. He gave her metronidazole. Well we got home, and the darn dog was fine---she wanted to eat and eat she did. Even out of a bowl!! I didn't give her any of the medicine, so it is in the refrigerator waiting for the next 'bout'. She is fine today. What starts this I don't know, but I wish I did! Just maybe I could prevent it.
