Default Emmie and Jazz

Hi everyone! I am having somewhat of a problem with my chi, Jazz, who is 9 years old, and Jazz, who is a siamese cat, 13 years old. Jazz was my roommates cat. My roommate died in June of cancer. Just in the past month, Jazz has started to come to me for affection. I love her too. BUT Emmie does not! Most of the time Jazz is sleeping and not a 'problem' for Emmie. They watch each other, but are respectful. At night, Emmie goes 'to bed' about 9pm, in her pen. The gate is closed and she has her little plastic crate in the pen. Lately, Jazz has wanted to climb into my lap for some loving. Em will 'charge' to the pen door, growling. Scares the cat, obviously. I tell her to 'go to bed' and she will turn around grumbling, but does obey. What, if anything can I do about this? Jealousy!

I feed my pets together and give them their joint medication treats while seated side by side. This has cut down on the tension greatly. There is still a weekly dust up but it's just the cat jumping onto something high up and raising a paw in the air. Nothing ever comes of it.

My Siamese must enjoy sniffing Chihuahuas with feigned disdain because he does it so often. The dogs will occasionally lick the cat's face. They sit together in front of the screen door and sleep within inches of each other. So far, no cuddling. Maybe winter will inspire them.

Good luck and bless you for caring for the Siamese. I see so many of them in our local shelters (where I got mine).

Jazz has her 'own' bathroom! When she was a baby, and I didn't want her wandering the house at night, she was shut in with her food, bed/s/ and potty and toys. She kept that room as her own.! I have it fixed so the chi's can't get into the bathroom and get into her pot. They love the kitty poop! Like Caviar! At any rate she now has the run of the house all day and night. Unfortunately, I am some what allergic to her. She loves to lick my face. Very itchy! Also my eyes get very itchy and burn. She also loves to give my nose very soft 'love bites'! If Emmie sees her trying to get into my lap, she 'rushes' at her, growling. The cat is about 10-11 pounds and Emmie is about 9-9.5 pounds--so the cat could 'take' her down if she so wished. She is declawed in the front only. When Em was a baby, the cat jumped into the pen, and scared the heck out of her! Maybe Em remembers that? I should be glad that they just tolerate each other, and only go after each other when one can't get to the other!

If she had a bad experience with the cat, I wouldn't be surprised if that is the root of what is happening here. If Jazz jumping up on your lap is something Emmie is not used to seeing her do, it probably surprises her, which scares her. If you stay calm when she reacts, she will hopefully realize Jazz on your lap is not anything to worry about.

My cat has a room with a baby gate keeping the dogs out. He also has a people bed and 3 window perches they can't access.

The mutual treat time and dedicated play definitely made things calmer. My newest dog has been here a month and he's only yelled at the cat once.

We're lucky that the animals are never alone. There's always someone here. That might help, too.

Allergic! You're an angel.

thanks for all the posts. I'm lucky that it is only when Em is enclosed (at night) in her pen, when she makes the growly/snarly noises and 'rushes' the pen door. I'm amazed that the cat gets spooked when she does this. Can't she figure out that Em can't get to her? Oh well, I'll stop telling Em 'No' and just ignore it.

Em doesn't do the behavior during the day? Or does Jazz only come up to you usually at night?
I also think if she had a negative experience with the cat that might be the reason she acts that eay toward the cat.
I think your pretty awesome for keeping your roommates cat and even being allergic.
I hope you can work it out with Emmie and Jazz.

During the day, they 'watch' each other, but are civil. They don't sniff each other, nor go really close, but are able to co-exist with each other. Jazzy usually doesn't come to me, except for the evening, when the dogs have been put to bed in their pens. Last night I had red patches on my face, 'cause Jazz was in a licking mode! I finally just put my hand in between her and my face. Boy cats tongues are really rough! I feel badly that I can't give her more attention, but this seems to satisfy her?
