I would want food; good quality please, plus good treats. Leashes, collars, harnesses. Some of the later should fit a chihuahua puppy! Crates and pads for them, beds, and pads for around the house. Toys that are safe for all sizes like Kongs. Dishes. Those are essentials.

Things I don't want: LIVE pets. You could do your local shelter a favor and have pictures of those pets they have for adoption, or have the shelter bring over some of their pets for adoption and bring them back to the shelter after a 'showing'. A special time on the weekends maybe. No pets should be at the shelter over night. JMO

That last sentence should read : no pets should be at the pet store overnight. Sorry 'bout that.

The main thing I personally look for in a pet shop is one that sells high quality foods, treats and chew treats. I hate it when all a pet shop sells is the Royal Canine, Science Diet and Pedigree type of crap.

A selection of good highly rated foods like Ziwipeak, Orijen, Acana, pre-made raw foods, etc. (Some that are highly rated on the Dog Food Advisor website)
Good natural chew treats like dehydrated rabbit ears, beef tendons, bully sticks, tripe sticks, etc.

Other than that: harnesses (some that are small enough for chihuahuas ), leashes, collars, all kinds of toys (including little balls that are small enough for chihuahuas like Kong balls), nice clothes (including some that fit chihuahuas), beds, carriers, brushes, deshedders, nail clippers, bowls, etc.

Also products like pet toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, certain meds that don't require a prescription (like for motion sickness or to help diarrhoea), supplements (like salmon oil), etc.

Like Susan said, the only thing I wouldn't want to see in a pet shop is the sale of cats and dogs. You can let good breeders and shelters advertise maybe, but the animals shouldn't actually be (or be sold) in the pet shop.

That's pretty amazing your wanting to open a pet store 🙂
I would say work with a shelter or maybe even local rescue. They could come and people can meet all the dogs/cats that are in need of homes.
Also have a variety of food not just low cost end of the scale. But also maybe have a few options for all: low, medium & high.
Good luck and hopefully you can accomplish your goal 🙂

One more here for NO sales of cats or dogs. I look for the same as others, high quality foods, toys, and equipment. I will not go in a store that sells puppies.

Considering most sources to obtain puppies are puppy mills, I am thoroughly against selling puppies in pet stores. You can, however, hold adoption days and have shelters and/or rescues bring dogs in to show to potential adoptees.

I tend to be very impressed with stores that sell premade raw food. Stella and Chewy and Primal are popular brands, but there are many out there. Also, I love shopping for high quality treats, especially freeze dried ones.
